CA 199 from Crescent City, CA to Grants Pass, OR

This our most direct route north from Mendocino, CA to Eastern WA. I have talked with with some people that have driven this route and said that I will not enjoy looking at the rear of my MH rounding some of the curves, and that it is a miserable drive. Is the road OK for us, or are there other options?

We are driving a 35' Class A MH, and are not in a real hurry.
  • FYI MHs over 40' are prohibited on 199 and many other CA roads. No mention of trailer length restrictions.

I've asked for the restrictions to be removed on 20 to Ft Bragg. We'll see if that happens.
  • Thanks everyone. Of course i'd love to do it in a Porsche... actually My DIL's brother is bridging his Ferrari Modena to camp with us in E. WA next week. It's fun to go get firewood in it..

I'm comfortable driving twisty and hilly with the MH, and I'm not towing this time., so I'll take that route, thanks again for the helpful information.

Golden HVAC: There is also a WA State weigh station near Anacortes, and I did weigh the MH and was presently surprised ~2,300 lbs below what I expected and the MH capacity.

Sorry about the OR/CA confusion, Google maps doesn't show state lines well.
  • CA Traveler and paulj:

Thanks for the info, I'm glad that I'm below that length. We did CA 128 to Albion in September, and up and down Hwy 1 for a bit in a rental car. The regulations make sense.
  • Ron - I see you're from Anacortes, you will have no problem with CA 199. Just take it easy and enjoy the redwoods along the way the first few miles east of Crescent City. Easier to drive than many stretches of WA 20 in the North Cascades or on Whidbey Island.

After a night with friends in Long Beach, WA, and then on to Cape Kiwanda RV Park, OR, we're driving down 101 through Oregon, and are now at Winchester Bay RV Resort for a couple of days, then Harris Beach SP in Oregon, and then down to Caspar Beach RV Park near Mendocino, CA for a few days with relatives and their RV's. We then head north to Crescent City at Bayside RV Park, then to Crater Lake RV Park in Prospect, OR, to Crater Lake NP, then west around the park since the North entrance is not open yet, and a long drive to Maryhill SP in Goldendale, WA, and then to Steamboat Rock SP for a few days with the kids/grandkids, and then back through Winthrop on SR 20 to Anacortes.

As they say in Australia about the condition of the bay... there are sheep in the pasture. It's blowing about 25 knots from the North. I'm about to suck in the slides to lessen the flapping, but it's sunny and beautiful.
  • Since you are already coming down the coast on US101, it makes more sense to return via US199. Then you are in a good position to continue up the Rogue River to Crater Lake.

Last time I looped through the area, I came SW on OR62, wander around south of Medford, cross to the coast at Gold Beach (on a non-rv road), and then returned to US97 via Cape Blanco, OR42, OR138. I've only driven US199 as far as Patrick Creek.

Both 62 and 138 are nice ways of crossing the Cascades.
  • Thanks paulj

There are not many options getting from West to East in this part of the world.

I looked at heading through Clear Lake, CA, but I promised never to spend a dollar, or visit that county. I have a sailing acquaintance that was charged with murder after a woman on his boat was killed by the drunk sheriff that drove over the top of their boat at 50mph in the dark, and the sheriff was never checked for BAC or charged. A truly corrupt county. I had amazing conversations with Clear Lake County Commissioners and the CA state attorney General (Moonbeam?).

My acquaintance was acquitted, but it ruined his life. The sheriff was voted out of office, but was never charged. The CA Innocence Project took on the case and provided some clarity to the situation.
  • We have done it in our 36' Dolphin the opposite way from Grants Pass down to Crescent city but end of next week we will do it the way you are describing. No it is not as much fun in the motorhome as on my motorcycle or in my little BMW but it is very do able without remodeling the seats with crinkle marks from tightening sphincters! :B

BTW we don't have the time on the way up but if you do I would continue up 101, we will come home that way the end of June. Need to get up to Portland after I do some work in Livermore next week for the birth of our first grandchild due May 20! :B :B
  • We just completed the drive and are now at Crater Lake. It was a great drive with a few tight spots, but well worth the effort. Much of the road is 55/65 mph with adequate turn-outs.

Highway 1 from Fort Bragg to Leggett was actually a very similar drive. I'd do them both again.

Just East of Patrick Creek there is a well scalloped guard rail on a very tight corner, and guess where we met the on-coming loaded logging truck.
