California Highways Question

I am at 42' and with the toad I am at 64', just 1' shy of the maximum. I have driven on some of the red routes without any issues, however, if you are not comfortable on windy narrow 2 lanes roads with little to no shoulder you should probably pass. On one of the routes I did see an accident, a rig with a tag axle, probably around 44-45' scraped the side of the mountain. he showed up later at the campground and was a few spots down. He was cited for length. I doubt you would be stopped and measured, but draw attention to yourself and you could be cited. Not sure what the citation cost.

Most of those roads are doable in RV's. Some people can't handle them, but if your confident in your driving most are fine. If you have questions about a specific route just ask on here and people will give you good info. Just be cautious of the people who never want to take their RV off the freeway.

Highway 1 along the coast in areas is restricted to 40' single vehicles and I have done it many times in my 35' mh and toad. Some of the mountain passes are best to avoid. For example Highway 108 and Highway 4 over the sierra's are not real RV friendly. But 88, 50, and 120 are all fine for RV's.

There are only a few restricted areas when you consider the thousands of miles of roads in California. When you start planning your trip post your ideas and the many Californians on line can give you assistance. An example is beautiful highway 1. Most of it is no problem for the RV tourist, however the area between Morro Bay and Carmel has turns so tight you can see your taillights. It also has cliffs dropping into the sea. For the most part you should have little or no concerns.

I can't speak for 5er owners but I use that map and if they don't want 40 or 45 footer MH's to drive those routes,then I don't want to drive my 32 ft MH towing my CRV on that route either. I stay away from that route or just drive my CRV. I have driven Hwy 1 from fort bragg to Leggit and it was not fun, note this section of hwy 1 is a RED route on the cal trans map noted by the OP and 40 and 45 feet MH are prohibited on RED routes. Just use common sense and make up your own mind.

Trailer/fiver combinations are articulated- that joint makes them more maneuverable on twisty roads than longer, rigid mohos.

A common sign you will see out here is "No Vehicles Over 30 Feet King Pin to Axle" or something like that.

Can't stay in your line on the curves.

I'll be 58 feet total length. Narrow roads don't bother me unless I'm meeting large traffic.

We will travel on some of the restricted routes for local trips. But most are easily bypassed on longer journeys. We have found that many of the restricted routes are narrower than normal for state highways. Our 5er will be riding the fog stripe and the center stripe at the same time.
