campground suggestions on I 81 in Va

Creekside CG in Edinburg. Half the sites back right on the creek. No traffic noise.

We,also use those 4 campgrounds...and they are as good as you stated...another we found is Lee-Hi campground off exit 197..in Va...located behind a truck stop but not so they keep you hear it....a small c/g with maybe 9 or so pull thrus....have stayed away from Candyhill since the new owners have it.....Chuck

I agree with Fort Chiswell. About a mile south of I-81, but over a small hill from it. No expressway noise. FHUs. I couldn't get cable at my site. The owner brought his TV to my site and hooked it up. Problem was with my TV - not his hookup. So he let me use his portable TV that night. That's service.

Another vote for Shenandoah Valley Campground in Mt Jackson. It's right beside I-81 and perfect for an overnighter. We spent a weekend there earlier this year and really liked the place.

I think A-Jack hit it right on the head....we travel that route most of the time and it is great.....I also have seen that campground he talked about and plan on using it this year....only thing is ,I go 81 to I-66 to Rt 17...not sure that is what he meant...Chuck

Fort Chiswell RV Park Exit #80, just north of Wytheville, VA

We make the trip from Florida to way-Upstate NY every Spring and usually try a different route each time. This past Spring we spent a couple of nights at a fairly new campground just North of New Market. Shenandoah Family Campground
168 Industrial Park Road, Mt. Jackson (Quicksburg), Virginia 22842 (540) 477-3080.
It is just a mile off I-81 and a nice young couple run it. It is also a Passport America campground if you are a member.
That said, after years of travel on I-81 and I-95, we have found the fastest and best transition from I-81 to I-95 for us has been taking US-17 from Winchester, VA to Fredericksburg, VA. We've pulled a 38' 5th Wheel without any problems and it takes you through some nice Virginia horse country.

I have stayed at the Battle of Cedar Creek Campground for an overnight on the way back from my trip south. It is at exit 298 of I81. Nothing fancy, good pull-throughs.

Then take I81 to I66 east to US17 south to I95 south. It is shorter and less hilly.
