Camping in Port aux Basques

Our ferry will arrive around 9:30PM and we are trying to figure out where to stay that night. The man that took our ferry reservation said that the ferry had a place that you could stay until the next morning right off the boat, if it gets in late. Has anyone done this or is there a campground nearby. My guess is that any campground close by would fill up quickly. Just trying to find out what others may have done. Thanks for any suggestions.
  • The last 2X we have gone to Port aux Basque and got in late, we drove up the highway a short distance - maybe 3 to 5 miles and there is a large tourist info center. Several RV's overnighted there and in the morning we went in and got information for the Island. I think they open at 8 am. Maybe a phone call to them to confirm that overnighting is still allowed would be a good idea.

There is also a c.g. close to the ferry dock that stays open to accommodate the late ferries. Sorry I can't remember the name as we have not used it but I have seen ads for it. Possibly someone on here can provide that.
  • We've stayed at JT Cheeseman Prov, Park. It's about 6 or 7 km from Port Aux Basque. Just make sure you're in the left lane if you plan to go there after dark. We missed it once pulling the Fifth Wheel and had to find a place to turn around further up the road and that's hard to do when pulling a fiver if you're not familiar with the area! It's a nice park and there are staff there after dark.. they know the ferry schedules. Then take the toad and double back in the morning to see Rose Blanc Lighthouse.. it's well worth the side trip!!
  • We had a delayed sailing and did not arrive until 2 a.m. Nearly all of the RV's on board went to the Welcome Station (about 5km). Lots of parking. The staff arrives about 7:30 to open the restrooms. The are accustomed to it and are very nice. lizzie
  • X2 on Cheeseman, stayed there on our last night before our departure ferry. Very nice Prov. Park. I would plan a stay there next time upon arrival.
  • I HIGHLY RECOMMEND staying at the Grand Codroy campground. Quite simply it is the best campground we have ever stayed at. It's a former Provincial Park. The spots are large with FHU's and the best wifi ever found. We only stayed here one night but had we known we would have liked to extend our stay but we had ferry reservations.

There is an on site craft shop with real crafts made by real local craftsmen. My DW bought a pair of slippers knitted by a 93 year old woman. We had a great view of the river on one side and the Table Mountains on the other.

The campground is about a half hour from the ferry on the main (and only)highway.
  • It stays light pretty late but you have options.....beware of the moose lurking though.

We stayed at grand codroy and it was nice (just one night) but people we met on ferry stayed by roadside pull off.

    Cheeseman provinicial park.
