If your combined weight is under 5,000 kg. (11,023 lbs.) contact them and they should reduce the charge to a light vehicle rate.

Due to the outrageous toll charges I only use the 407 once or twice a year, usually towing my TT, and I do not have a transponder. The cameras do not and cannot calculate the weight of the vehicle and only get the picture of the trailer plate. On occasion I have been charged the heavy vehicle fee. My combined weight is under 5,000 kg. so whenever that happens I call them and they reduce the charge to the light vehicle rate. I have never had an issue with getting the reduction.

It's odd that you couldn't get a transponder, even the application describes the "customer address" in Province / State, Postal Code / ZIP Code format and since use of a transponder is mandatory for 5+ ton vehicles I can't believe they'd not allow vehicles from outside Ontario to use a major highway.

We live in BC, but have family near the 407. I can really see how a stranger to the area would not know what was involved with the road.
I forget exactly what the signs say, but it is something like "Electronic toll ahead". First time I saw it, I didn't know what it meant!

I was just visiting and passing through so didn't know about the transponder or what a transponder is. Really didn't see any signs because the traffic was so bad I had to keep my eyes on the road. Next year we plan on going to BC, is there things I should know about the roads in and around the Rockies?
I guess all governments are screwy. I thought the states had the corner on that market.

Not that I'm defending the charges, in fact I'm a big critic of the whole mess, but ........

Try driving through the 'transponder only' lanes on a Sun Paas or EZ Pass toll road and see how much you get billed.

I agree. I never use it. I use the 401 or QEW. I'd rather sit in traffic than pay those fees. I try to avoid Toronto at rush hour whenever possible.
I agree with Tripalot.

Totally disagree. The 407 is wonderful to avoid the constant traffic jams, accidents and gridlock of the 401 across Toronto. We always take the trailer that way with transponder and are only charged the toll fee for the vehicle. Well worth the expense.
