Central Pa to Cape May NJ, best route?

We live aprox 30 miles south of Williamsport, Pa.
We have traveled to Atlantic city, NJ in the past via Route 15 south through Harrisburg on to Interstate 76/pa turnpike through Philadelphia into NJ.

Directions to Cape Code, NJ show the same route.

Is there a way to avoid Philadelphia without adding tons of extra travel time? Philadelphia has to be the worst city to drive around, traffic, traffic, traffic. Driving around DC is far better then Philly.

I was thinking of Harrisburg to Lancaster, down route 41 to Wilmington De to Int 295 into NJ to route 40 then route 55

I know how the roads are to Wilmington DE (easy ride) but have never traveled route 40 or 55 in NJ.

Thanks for any travel tips you might have ;)

  • We used to take 41 into Delaware then go over the Delaware Memorial Bridge and take the first exit to yhr right before you pay the toll. Then take 49 through Bridgeton and Millville then Garden State Parkway to Cape May.Other than going through Bridgeton,it's pretty good with few traffic lights and nice 2 lane highway through the farming areas of the state. It's really nice if you can drive through there at night when there is little traffic. We would leave around midnight and arrive around 5am.
  • Taking I-476 (the Blue Route) south to I-95 north and back on I-76 takes some of the pain out of the Philadelphia traffic.
I believe it's the first exit after you get off the Turnpike.
