Construction on I35 around Ft. Worth and Waco?

It is getting time to head south. We normally take I35/I35W to San Antonio. However construction delays last year were horrible so we jumped over to US281. But that takes us out of our way for where we want to end up in San Antonio. What is the current status of construction particularly around Ft. Worth and Waco although if memory serves me right around Temple was also a bottleneck?
  • Traveled I-35 from Fort Worth to Temple back in August without pulling 5'th wheel. I wouldn't pull the camper through there until the construction is finished if it ever will be.
  • we came that way this summer, never again makes 75 through Atlanta like a day at the beach. thanks AAA.
  • We travel south from SW Oklahoma to Pleasanton (South of San Antonion on I-37) and alwasy take 281. Miss Dallas/Ft. Worth and Austin traffic.
  • We regularly travel north from San Antonio to Denton. US 281 is our preferred route. We did travel south on I-35 on Christmas 2016--not bad but again it was Christmas morning!
  • I personally would go 100 miles out of the way to avoid I-35!! Definitely want to avoid the areas you mentioned. The only good thing about I-35 is Czech Stop in West!!

I would go around FW on 820, catch Chisholm Trail Pkwy to Cleburne, 67 to Hico (via 220) and catch 281 down to SA. Might take a few minutes longer, but your blood pressure will be much lower going that way. And you never know when something major happens on 35 to shut it down.

  • Coming south out of Kansas. If you really want to miss the headaches of construction on I35 which I would and missing the Austin traffic. I recommend using Hwy 281. Otherwise slow down and don't worry about staying up with them. They drive too fast anyway.....
  • I35W from downtown Fort Worth north to Loop 820 (Or the other way around) still shows as being a construction zone, though according to the Texas DOT the work is scheduled to finish between early October and the end of December (there are lots of smaller projects all running together through there.)

Frankly, unless you're willing to just kick back and enjoy the scenery of a more rural route around it, there's just no easy way to get through the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Before setting out on any trip through Texas I check the drivetexas.org site and pull up the map with construction, floods, closures, and damage turned on. I find Texdot is pretty good about keeping the map updated. (For example, during Harvey the flooded roads that were were updated at least every couple hours as they cleared, and while they were flooding the updates were almost real-time.)
  • We drove it in May...late evening (probably 10 or 11 pm) still lots of traffic, hard on driver and 5er keeping pace with traffic. Moved stuff that had "never" moved before! Won't do that again....made "off-roading" seem tame!

EDIT!!!! Misread your post, saw 281 and immediately thought 80 East. Can't offer any good advice on westerly travel.

Don't know exactly where you are getting on 281.... but how about Oklahoma City (I 44) to Wichita Falls south on 281 thru Mineral Wells, then on to San Antonio.

Next time we go to Baton Rouge, we may take that route....Friends south of San Antonio. For us, it's a bit of a detour to Baton Rouge, but.....
