Corsicana area to Highway 287 through Fort Worth?

Leaving for Colorado on a Friday morning in early August. Was planning on going NE a bit to Greenville then up to Highway 82 and then west to pick up 287. All to avoid DFW.

This will add some time to the first leg of our trip. Was looking at the traffic on Google maps just now and I didn't see any major slow-downs or construction going north.

Driving a Class C with no tow.

For you who know the Fort Worth area and the existing conditions, do you think taking 287 from Corsicana through FW and to Wichita Falls and points beyond would be relatively free of hassles? I know there was construction about two years ago and we avoided that route.

Thanks in advance.
  • It has been a long time since I have been on 287 south of DFW, but I would do that, or I-45 to I-20 west to Ft Worth, before I would detour all the way around the east side thru small towns, smaller highways, and lower speed limits. I think you would be past Wichita Falls heading west before you ever reached 287 from 82. Just avoid rush hours.

I-35W construction thru Ft Worth is supposedly 97% complete now.
  • On my way to Wyoming from Louisiana last summer I took 82 across from near Texarkana to where it meets 287 outside Wichita Falls, then continued on 287 to Amarillo. At the time there was some significant construction work going on ground down rough pavement, uneven lanes, etc for several miles in the portion of 82 west of Sherman (lots of places with ground down pavement meeting small concrete bridges, then back to ground down pavement). That was 11 months ago, so one would hope it is better by now.
  • That route is not that bad. I do it and just try to go through the metro areas around work traffic hours. If you go through FW before 5am or after 9am you should be good.
