Devil's Tower to Custer State Park?

Hey guys! I'm seeking advice again about the best route. The advice I got to take 35 along the east side of Flathead Lake was great! That was a very enjoyable trip.

Now we need to get from Devil's Tower to Grace Coolidge in Custer State Park. Looks like our choices are WY 585 to 85 to 16 OR to Rapid City SD 79 to SD 36.

We're in a 30' gasser with a Jeep toad!

Thanks for any advice.
  • Go to Newcaslle via wy 585,to us 85, then us 16 east into the Hiils. good roads'very scenic and shorter. Just slow down in the federal property at Jewel cave for a mile or so.
  • use the highway 16 route. it will take you straight into Custer and then Custer Park and Grace Coolidge will be right on the same road. If you need to dump your tanks, I think there's a dump station at the North Stockade Lake Campground now.
Otherwise, you have to go on to Game Lodge campground, but it isn't too far from Grace Coolidge.

unless they just added the dump this year, the only dump stations are at game lodge camp ground and on the north end of the wild life loop.

Just got back from there and this is the better route. Rapid City traffic is not RV friendly......
  • I'm piggybacking on this topic as we also want to travel from Sundance, WY to Custer. We're in a 40' motor home with a toad. Is there any reason the route from WY 585 to 85 to 16 would be inadvisable for us?

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

No. it is all Super 2 lane highway, easy grades and wide shoulders, except for the 2 mile stretch through Jewel Cave NM. Just heed the signage there and enjoy the scenery.
The reason for that stretch not being improved is due to high potential damage to the fragile cave system below, and a bit of politics. Wait, maybe reverse the reasons.
  • Thanks SDCamperowneroperator. Appreciate the quick response and good advice on our travel plans.
  • Thanks for the route advice. It was an easy enjoyable drive. The road around Jewel Cave did leave a bit to be desired but it's still better than some we've driven!

We had a great time in the Black Hills and are heading east back to Indiana. I had hoped to stop at the Corn Palace in Mitchell today but the Corn Festival is this week and we're thinking Mitchell's streets will be jammed up with festival & festival goers. Guess we'll stop the next time we come this way!

We stayed in Murdo last night and enjoyed the Auto Museum. Simply amazing the stuff that is packed in there. For those that aren't into old cars there is much much more to see. Definitely worth the $10 an adult head charge.

    Thanks again!
