- Bank_of_DadExplorerYou mean I can't just drive up and park?
Thanks, have a rezzi for almost a year now.
And I'm going to go the I-10 route and spend a few days in San Antonio.
Thanks for all the help. - ALBQExplorerI'm sure that you have thought of this, but just in case be sure you have reservations for any RV Park or hotel for the Balloon Fiesta. It gets very packed that time of the year......

. . . I-10 to Mobile, then go through Hattiesburg, MS to I-20 at Jackson. We stay on I-20 to catch US 287 just south of Fort Worth, then to Amarillo and I-40.
Yes, indeed, this is another good alternative which we have done several times (from East Texas to Florida that is--we start here on I-20)
But I still recommend the alternative route from I-20 to Amarillo: US 69/US82/US287, but I enjoy the open country drive and even the small towns. We even have our favorite places to eat! And we actually prefer the non-freeway route.
The point is there are several good options and personal preference is still a very large factor.Only problem was snow one time in the Texas panhandle.
When we were active skiers, it was the Texas Panhandle which seemed always to be the worst part of the trip when there was snow--or even worse: ice. - sealevel_ramExplorerWe go west quite often, and do the I-10 to Mobile, then go through Hattiesburg, MS to I-20 at Jackson. We stay on I-20 to catch US 287 just south of Fort Worth, then to Amarillo and I-40.
Works for us with a 40 foot DP, towing. Traveled all different times of year. Only problem was snow one time in the Texas panhandle.
Correction: Just got back from our latest trip to the west.
Do NOT recommend the drive on 287 through Fort Worth. There is lots of road construction with really terrible road conditions. - Phil___StephieExplorerSee ya there !

From Shreveport West on I-20 but then I would take US 69 near Tyler to go up to Sherman and US 82, West then to near Wichita Fall to pick up US 287 to Amarillo where you will join I-40 and West all the way to Albuquerque.
This way you will not only come nowhere near Atlanta, but you will miss all the Dallas/Fort Worth traffic. We follow this route from East Texas to Colorado or New Mexico.
Last September we took I-10 and used I-49 to get to I-20. From there we drove the 69/82/287 route to get near Amarillo on I-40 and it was great. - padredwNomad
I-10 to beyond Slidell and then (I think) I-59 to Shreveport to pick up 20.
You gotte cross Louisiana some where. and 59 is better than 20.
No reason to come anywhere near Atlanta. The above route is the one I would suggest except that it is I-12 at Slidell then pick up I-10 again at Baton Rouge. I-49 is a relatively new interstate from Layfayette to Shreveport.

Alternative instead of US 19 is I-75 north to Tifton, GA then take 520 northwest from there to Columbus.
Both are good routes we use regularly to I-20 or suht to FL. - 2gypsies1Explorer IIIYou could take I-10 to Lafayette, Louisiana then north on I-49, west on I-20 to Longview, TX, north on 271 to Indian Nation Turnpike, Oklahoma to I-40 and west to Albuquerque. You'd miss Atlanta and Dallas
- pigman1ExplorerI-75 north to I-10. I-10 west to El Paso, then north on I-25 to ABQ. No mountains, very few hills and an easy run. We do it annually both ways.
