If you are coming from the south
Get off 101 just before San Jose and on to 85 and take that to I-280. Stay on I-280 to the exit for route 1, 19th ave. Try to stay in the center lane and follow the signs thru SF Park to the bridge.
There no tolls or restrictions that way I have been told not to go thru in the morning rush hours so I plan to be there mid day.
If you can Google map it you can see the whole thing.
I also stoped at the north end view area. I did a Google earth on it and you can do a virtual drive thru the whole thing.
A nice to stay is the KOA Petaluma, a short drive into the city.
Good luck - MNtundraRetNavigatorWhere are you coming from? South on the peninsula?
If so, the best (only) route through from south to the golden gate bridge would be highway 101. When the freeway ends it becomes Van Ness Avenue heading straight north until Lombard Street. 101 turns left (west) on Lombard and continues until it becomes a regular highway passing Crissy Field just before the Golden Gate Bridge.
This route is the least hilly (a play on words). Do not get off the route or you will have big time problems.
Side streets are crowded with cars even with 70% of the people not being able to afford a car if they live there. No such thing as a nice place to camp near San Francisco on the peninsula.
If your first trip there stay over on the mainland (Oakland side of bay) and visit with your car only coming across the Bay Bridge to downtown S.F. Hauling your trailer better to take the 580 bridge north of Oakland to get to the west coast and Napa valley area. - the_bear_IIExplorerYes you can although the traffic can be very bad plus the lanes are narrow. Try to make the drive through San Francisco on Saturday or Sunday. If you have to do it during the week, 9am to 11am or 1:30pm to 2:30pm would have the least amount of traffic.
