Emergency calls on US GSM cell phone?

As we have prepared for our trip we had plans to purchase the SIM card from mexicosimcards.com . Unfortunately I got busy with other projects and did not get it ordered in time.

Unless I find a last minute alternative I will be visiting the Telcel store in San Carlos to get my SIM card.

Can anyone tell me if you can make emergency calls on a GSM phone that is not subscribed to Telcel?

I know that in the US phones that have no service plan associated with them can still call 911.

Does it work that way in Mexico? I don't expect to need it but I do prefer having the means to make the call if needed.

This will just be needed from Nogales to San Carlos.

Thanks

Steve
  • There may be reasons for having a phone in Mexico. We rarely need one. Calling an RV park could be a reason. Calling a restaurant for reservations? Going somewhere for evening entertainment? There are emergency numbers to call in Mexico. On the road the Green Angels are worth knowing about. Seems to me there are some other emergency numbers to know - I was thinking there is an 076 on cuotas but now not sure - Angeles Verdes is 078 I think. There are other numbers. Below are websites where more can be found..........

We usually get our phone and internet service set up at the Telcel office in Guaymas near San Carlos - make sure you completely understand how their system works as it is very different from the US.
  • Even if you had a working phone who would you call? Do you speak Spanish? There are some emergency #'s in various states but most operators do not speak English. AFAIK there is no universal 911#.

  • Vincent at Mexicosimcards.com can ship to a RV park that you want on the way down.He is very helpful if you contact him. We are using him again this year as we work on the road and need his services.
  • OK, how bad are we????? We don't own a cell phone in either country. We have found that if we have issues, and have over the years, someone always comes along, or we can limp into what we need, or something.
I said this a few months ago: relax, have a great time, take it as it comes.
We just made a personal policy decision: For about 5 years, we have done the wild 500 mile run from San Carlos to Mazatlan in one day, same on the way north. Last week, we arrived in Maz and had an electrical meltdown when we parked. We were lucky. We realized that we don't drive 500 miles in one day in the US!!!! What WERE we thinking, or not thinking?? No more, put everything back together, got back on the road this morning, and drove 177 miles to Tepic. Lovely. Keep things in perspective! It's a vacation, an adventure.
