EZ PASS for out of state visitor?

I'll be taking a trip to the DC area this week to visit family... and pretty much every direct route between here and there is an EZ PASS toll road.

Last time I was in DC, many of the toll roads didn't accept any form cash / card payment, just the EZ PASS.

I surfed around Google for quite a while but I didn't see any clear indications of how to get a pass for temporary use, as it has to be linked to your license plate or some such.

Sure I can program my navigator to "avoid" toll roads, but I'd rather keep it simple and just pay.

Any suggestions?

You can stop at most any C V S store,in Ind,or Ill, and buy a transponder......and set up an account with A Credit card.

    I haul RVs out of Elkhart/Goshen area...all over,and my transponder works in Pa,Virgina,D.C.,New York,Ill, Ind........etc..
    Very easy to do.:W
  • I would suggest you open an I-Pass account in Illinois. This can be done over the internet and they will send the transponder to you. It's good anywhere EZ-Pass is accepted. The advantage of the I-Pass over other state's EZ-Pass accounts is there is no monthly maintenance fee like most of the other states charge. We purchased an EZ-Pass in MD a few years ago and it didn't take long for the maintenance fees to eat up our balance when we were traveling in other parts of the country. We purchased an I-Pass last year and is still has the balance left it in when we left the area, waiting on us to travel to another EZ-Pass state for use.
  • When we planned out trip from Texas to Connecticut via Florida - toll roads were a concern. So I went on-line and got a Sunpass for Florida, and an EZ-Pass for the northeast.

Simple and easy. Though I do try to avoid toll roads when possible. Sometimes it is not - especially with bridges.

As mentioned above - always monitor any toll pass account - and watch for spurious charges. I've found toll agencies are always very easy to deal with about unwarranted charges.
  • I've been using EZ Pass for a long time and love it. However, about a year ago, I had to replace a couple of my tags. Evidently, while my tags were being transported around the New York city area, my sensors were read at a couple of toll gates. I noticed the charges on my EZ Pass statement and promptly called. They immediately took care of the problem. But if using EZ Pass, you do need to monitor your monthly statement. Using EZ pass can reduce or eliminate waiting in lines to pay tolls when you use the EZ Pass only toll booths.
  • I went through a toll booth that was closed in New York a few years back. No way to pay, no attendant, nothing. A few weeks later I get a ticket in the mail for not paying the toll plus the cost of the toll. I called them and said I would be happy to pay the toll, but I didn't live in New York and they could forget the ticket. They agreed. I wonder how many people just pay it and they get all of that extra $$.
  • Went thrrough a toll plaza in Ca that had no provisions for paying and recieved a bill in the mail with a pic of our car. Maybe they do this back there also ?
