I do know from experience you want a national plan not a limited service area plan.

I have no idea. I just suggested they call companies to ask them. Fed Retiree have a short list of plans to choose from so enrollees can go down the list and call to ask questions.

Maybe briansue can find out via internet what American insurance companies work with Mexican insurance companies or vice versa, I know that there are a few that do work that way, my sister worked for the Ford Motor Company and had insurance via an insurance company in Detroit, there has to be something, to many American companies in Mexico with a lot of US personnel with families.

To correct any misunderstanding on my post about APWUHP - my wife read what I wrote and thought when I said they reimburse I meant 100% - that was not what I meant - wife says she has called and checked and they reimburse 75% of out of the country charges - no idea how it works as we have never had to do it. If you are eligible I suggest contacting APWUHP to talk with them about it.

Not to argue - Kaiser was in CO - knew people who had it and people who worked there. Maybe you didn't mean they are ONLY in California? And by no means am I suggesting anyone get Kaiser. Just relayed a story from a friend. Anyway, if anyone is interested I checked their website to find what states they are in.........

Usually you need to pay in cash and submit your receipts to your insurance company. I've only heard of two hospitals in the entire country that will work with a foreign insurance company, and they charge US prices.

Get a magicjack, so you have an actual US number you can call from if you have a decent net connection. I have their app on my cellphone which works if there is decent net. Also check your auto insurance down there, osme like lewis & Lewis offer evacuation insurance to some SW cities and Vancouver, BC. The latter may work well if you are close to the border.

800 numbers can not be accessed from American cell phones, unless you pay and the chargers are huge, try to get phone numbers that have the actual area code from doctors, hospitals, insurance, bank, etc.

Some Mexican land line phone carriers can go trough to the 800 numbers, not all will and only land line ones not cell phones.
