High Sulphur Diesel

Old topic, but a little different. Has anyone had motor problems with post Jan 1, 2007 USLD diesel motors on the higher sulphur diesel common to Mexico and SA? Thinking about a SA trip and good gas trucks are hard to find and many of the diesels are getting a little long in the tooth.

  • We met one guy who gave his old diesel to his daughter and SIL when he bought a new one. When ho goes to Mexico he simply trades them for a few months.

I have seen many of the newer diesels in Mexico and have not talked to any of them who has had a problem. I think (as stated above) it depends on how much fuel you put through the engine. Plus, as has been stated in the past, some stations may actually have the low sulphur fuel, whether they actually know they have it is another story.
  • It's one reason I am not trading my truck in. If I need to I will go gas. Being able to spend winters in Mexico is more important to me than torque.
  • Thanks, sort of what I expected. I ran into a couple of 5ers in SMA several years ago with new 2008 Chevys. That had noticed increase in frequency of the regen burn and that was from the border to SMA.
  • This subject has come up a lot. I have run into many people who have had no issues with a trip to & from Mexico. I met one person who took his truck to Central America and had a very high repair bill as a result.

It won't harm the engine but you will clog the particle filter with too many tank fulls. If that happens you are not going anywhere.
  • I have put about 6 tanks (600 gallons +-) of mexico diesel fuel into my motorhome and have not had any problems. I had found the information to lead me to believe you needed to out 10 tanks or more of diesel in to cause any harm.
Sorry I could not help any more.
