I wouldn't consider Hwy 12 in Idaho a mountain road. It's in a valley following the river. That is, until you get to Lolo Pass. Regardless, the pass is only at an elevation of 5200' and it's only 4-5 miles of 5-6% grade. That isn't bad.
The thing you really need to know is that the river drive in about 75 miles of turns along the river so you won't be making good time. It's a gorgeous drive.
Try to time it on Monday-Thursday. It gets a lot of weekender traffic. Enjoy!
