How do the grades compare on I-40 to 441 in NC

Hello, I tow a 33 ft travel trailer with an 04 Suburban 2500. For years we have traveled from SC to Tennessee to camp in the Pigeon Forge area and have always taken the 441 route over Newfound Gap. The last time my burb found it a little tougher to get over than before and we came back via I-40 with no issues. I have never taken I-40 to Tennessee before and am considering it for the next trip. Can anyone compare the grades going north on I-40 to those on 441 for me?
Thanks,George

  • Thanks Guys, I appreciate the information. I will take I-40 this trip. I plan to still take 441 to Sylva then 23 over to I-40 since we live in the north west corner of SC near the NE GA border. I know the mountain at Gold City Gem Mine is pretty bad but the burb usually does alright on it. And it has time to cool down on the other side where as 441 over Newfound Gap is a very long uphill climb.
  • Less than half as steep. Your 'burb will love you for using I40 instead of 441. :) :)
  • It has been my experience. That once you get to the top of the hill / Top of Black Mountain. Then 40 isn't really so bad on into Tenn. Some 50 MPH curves, and some minor hills, but nothing major.

And depending on how you intend to get to 40. I-26 has a pretty good (6%) grade at Saluda. Again not as bad as Black Mountain.
