How is 199 from Crescent City to Grants Pass in winter

We are thinking about going down the Oregon Coast this coming winter and thought about coming home via I5 and then DH mentioned we might not want to try 199 at that time of year. We have a Class C It...

Yes 199 can be icy and have chain requirements. If I had to pick my route now, and not wait til the time comes and see if it's clear an dry, I would go north on 101 to eithere 42 or 38.
