How is Tracfone and/or Virgin Mobile internet service

Planning my June, 2013 trip to Alaska and have some connectivity questions:

I have a Tracfone that I use here in the States, and was wondering if it works in Canada and on the way up through Alaska?

Also I have Virgin Mobile Broadband internet for my laptop. Does this work in Canada on the way to Alaska and through Alaska?

Looking for input from travelers with similar technology.

  • Even if I had a data USB that would work in Canada, $20 for 100mb is too expensive for me. For example, yesterday here at the house , on a fiber optic line, I downloaded a couple of digital copies of Money Magazine which I subscribe to. One copy was 60mb of data and the other was 151mb. For a total of 211mb . This would have cost me about $50usd to have downloaded it in Canada on the US plan. 100 mb is not very much data.

    I make sure I turn off data roaming and automatic data push on my smart phone while in Canada. If not the phone will still , in the background, be checking for texts, emails, program updates, etc over the cellular side of your phone. We use AT&T for a phone carrier, so it will jump on any Rogers Communication it can find in Canada as they are the roaming partner of our carrier and visa versa in he US.

    We just wait till we have wifi service somewhere and use that for free or pay for the service. I have never had to go over two days without wifi, if I am moving in Canada. Most communities, small or bigger will have wifi available somewhere in town.
  • Hi,

    Unfortunately Virgin Canada and Virgin USA are two entirely separate companies. I.E. the USA dongle will not work in Canada.
  • Along the Alaska Highway, there is cellular service only in the communities.

    Fort St John Fort Nelson, Watson Lake and Whitehorse have 4G, as does Dawson City on the Klondike Highway.

    For the other communities you must have a CDMA compatible phone.

    The infrastructure is a bit behind the times here.
  • check for roaming charges for your wifi usb's for Canada. You may be faced with excessive roaming costs. I know if I use my Canadian one, the roaming charges are through the roof.
  • I have a Virgin Mobile mifi. If bought from Wal-Mart, you can get 1GB for 30 days for $20.

    There is another Wal-Mart program that may be cheaper.

    I also carry a T-Mobile USB that I have never activated because I have not needed it!

    HTH;
    John
