Hwy 101 NB from Santa Barbara

I've forgotten about the road conditions if I want to stay on NB 101 bypassing the Lake Cachuma route (the 154 iirc) and staying on the 101 the entire way (I know it turns into the 1 near Goleta)

Is it still good for trailers?

  • Just saw your vehicles. If that's what you're coming up in you shouldn't have any problems on any of the routes mentioned. You'll be fine if heading south and want to take Santa Rosa (Hwy 1) to SLO to catch 101 south.

If you stay on HWY 101 north from Santa Barbara, you'll be fine. I've done that route several times with no problems (MH & Tow). If you're going to Morro Bay, you may want to consider taking Los Osos Valley Road (just south of San Luis Obispo) to cross over from HWY 101 over to HWY 1. Its an open road mostly through farmland. Its a lot better cross over route for a big rig & tow than the route that passenger cars would normally take from HWY 101 to HWY 1 through the congested, tight, downtown streets of San Luis Obispo. Good Luck!

Depeneds on the day/date of travel. Two issues:
    1) The offramp for LOVR from 101 is OK. At the stoplight at the end of the off ramp be in the center lane. A hard left and if the east bound vehicle crowded the limit line it can get real close if you are in the left lane. Far right lane is right turn only.

The next mile can be a pain. Worst section in the entire city. Road surface is good, just the amount of traffic between 101 and Madonna Rd. There are COSTCO, Home Depot, and a medium shopping area on the south side, Target, Dicks, Olive Garden and such on the north side. Roadway is two lanes in both directions but local drivers seem "confused" by the shear number of cars around them.

    2) The new sewer system is being installed in Los Osos and at times Los Osos Valley Rd. from Clark Valley Rd to South Bay Blvd. is a mess. Currently they have the intersection of LOVR and SBB torn up during the week. They are working east to where the new plant will be built.

This makes a bit of an issue if you are going south from this area as many of us opt for the SBB/LOVR route when heading south.

As for the Morro Bay offramp from 101 in SLO, I do it when coming home going north on 101 pulling a 38' Montana 5er. The right turns are fine if you take it slow and careful. About 100 yds to the right turn onto Santa Rosa St. Maybe 1/2 mile of 4 lane city street then you're out of town.
  • Not only is it divided, it's a freeway all the way from Santa Barbara to San Francisco.

  • I'm only going as far as Morro Bay. I'd really like to avoid that whole Lake Cachuma deal.

    Thanks for the info!
  • How far are you going? 101 turns inland at Gaviota and heads north across the state. It is 4 (or 6) lane all the way at least to San Jose. At Gaviota, once you turn inland and about a mile north of the tunnel there is a route 1 exit that goes to Lompoc, Vandenberg and Santa Maria. That is mainly 2 lane but has some 4 lane sections. North of Santa Maria hwy 1 goes to coastal communities Guadalupe, Oceano,Pismo Beach while 101 goes further inland but has access roads to these communities.

I don't think Hwy 101 turns into Hwy 1, but Hwy 1 is on the same alignment as Hwy 101 for a distance, and then Hwy 1 goes back to hugging the coast line. Hwy 101 is a four lane freeway for the entire lenght. Hwy 1 from Morro Bay north to Carmel is very twisty, but extremely beautiful. Probably not the best route for larger RV's, MH or trailers.

Its a little curvy by gaviota with a tunel you have to go though but other wise a piece of cake lot better then route 154.

Thanks, I couldn't for the life of me recall! And I hate that Lake Cachuma route anyway LOLOL

  • On the satellite view, US101 is divided all the way.
