Hwy 54 to Guadalajara

Top of the day to all.
We are relatively experienced travelers in Mx, with 5th wheel, motorhome and now with 1/2 ton and hotels, which kind of gives us the option of seeing more of MX on the back roads. We have a permanent palapa in Paamul and go down each year for 4 months. We normally cross at Eagle Pass and pic up hwy 57 around Arco and on to the Yucatan. This year we would like to pic up Hwy 54 out of Saltillo through Zacatecas and stay on 54 straight to Guadalajara, we have never traveled this road before, any information would be appreciated.
One more question the last 3 years we have travelled in a 2010 Dodge diesel with a extra fuel tank that gave us a range of 1,7000/miles but we still filled with LSD and had no problem with fuel. This year we have the 2014 Dodge-EcoDiesel much better milage but needs DEF, with the extra tank I should be able to get around 2,4000/miles but will still be filling with LSD or is ULSD available now, and can you get DEF in MX.
Thanks much any info would be appreciated.
  • Yes that hwy is good. BTW if you are looking at the churchs book, Hotel Bosque is now Hotel Baruk, It is well signed along the highway. If you need instruction on passing through Aquascalientes, PM me with your email.
  • We recently came on hwy 54 from Guadalajara to Zacatacas at the end of August. Hwy is good condition, winding, slow, but quite scenic. Actually a pleasent drive if you are not in a hurry. We will be going back in October to Jocotepec but will take hwy. 45 from Zacatacas to Aguascalientes then on to Guadalajara.
  • We know a couple of people that bring an extra 5 or 10 gallons of DEF with them, and they have not had any problems that I have heard of, but that was with a one ton pickup.
  • DEF, if available , would be hard to find and very expensive. AFAIK here are no vehicles sold in Mexico that require DEF. Heck there is hardly any ULSD why would they have DEF. I haven't seen any reports of more stations with DEF. You might consider a spare tank for DEF. I have driven trucks with DEF but do not know what will happen if you run out. I think it derates to where the truck is not usable. Have you checked in one of the Baja forums for more info?
