I-24 & I-57 TN, KY & IL

Planning on driving up to IL tomorrow. The route will take on I-24 from TN to IL then I-57. For folks that live in those areas, any word on the condition of those interstates with this winter storm rolling through?

Ha Ha Ha Your joking right. Stay home.

Actually, I'm not joking. My aunt died and her memorial service is Saturday. Am hoping that the interstates will stay passable. Starting to give up hope for that.
  • At this moment it is OK. We are to be in Nashville 8:30 am and I am concerned. Keep an eye on what is coming out of AR. I expect north of Paducah KY may be worse or at least that is the case historically speaking. Here in Murray it was in the lower 60's on Tue and hit 70F with sun yesterday so roads were not as cold as they will be say in Jan so that is a help.

No one knows at this point but you should see reports in the morning showing you where the ice/snow line may be. The Nashville them was about 44 a few hours ago and only to become freezing at about 6 PM on Friday.

Be careful and which you a safe trip to be with the family.
  • Biggest problem will be in the southern states. They don't have plows or salt trucks and the locals freak out when it snows or ices up.

The road going thru Paducah will be your most treacherous part of the trip. I did it once in winter and the roads where really wicked. And dodging the locals cars and trailers spinning out on a quarter inch of snow all around you is even more dangerous.

If at all possible just sit and wait a day until it all goes thru.
  • I-57 north of I-70 can be treacherous in snow, the west wind blows across the road and it ices over quickly.

    Be careful and be safe.
  • OK Sorry I thought this was a joke because this is the worst area to travel through in this storm. They have heavy sleet and ice all through that route. If you must travel be sure to go prepared to be stranded if the worst happens. Good Luck!!
  • Update to let everyone know I played it safe and cancelled my trip. The clincher was the forecast for Sunday which was to be my return trip; ice and snow for the same areas. I would have hit it coming and going.
  • Hope you made it fine. We left KY for Nashville this morning at 5:30 am with rain and temp of 31 and it was OK by dropping straight down about 10 miles into TN and going due east on 79 to Clarksville then on by I-24.

While we were at the doctor's appointment the son and I studied the weather waiting for the doctor to finish her exam and we decided due to KY having more ice by then to come back the same way. We left Nashville about 11 am in 35F rain. When we got back on 79 (Clarksville) it was down to 31 with rain, sleet and snow so it was less than ideal to Dover but the roads were covered and we saw some wrecks as we drove about 30 MPH the last 50 miles but got home OK.

They called yesterday afternoon and cancelled the appointment we had for next week and being there 8:30 am was the only option they had the rest of this year so we said yes.

When we got home we got two other vehicles ice free should we need to go but plan on staying home. We did fire up the furnace in the MH and let it cycle about six times to make sure it was OK after not being used for 2 years. It checked out OK. First we lit all three burners of the RV range and that was a chore but they slowly went to full flames. We got new plugs in the RV generator too this week as well as the back up generator for the house. At this point the ice storm will have to wait until next time (could be Sunday per some). It is to be clear but quite cold however. Getting the garage cleaned out so we could get the ATV's inside so we can work on them this winter, the MH generator and furnace working well took up much of the week but that is what early ice alerts are good to make happen in a positive way. :)
