I-40 from Asheville in route to Elkmont/GSMNP, road advice..

We have a mid-July trip coming from the south up through I-40 heading to Elkmont campground in GSMNP. I'm thinking I-40 to 321, then 321 towards Gatlinburg. The question I have is how much of a pain is it pulling a 30' TT through Gatlinburg? Should I look at taking the Gatlinburg Bypass to avoid the less then one mile of hecticness in Gatlinburg?

  • One mph would be way too fast through Gatlinburg. But, it's a fun town when walking.
  • Bypass. Avoid Gatlinburg like the plague.
I cannot imagine the horrible feelings you will generate creeping thru traffic with a 30' TT in the 'fast' lane.
  • Coming into G'burg on 321 just go through town. The bypass is as far back through part of the town as it would be to just go throuh. Trucks do it so you can too. I would get in the inside lane and stay there all the way through town...not all that far. You could go back to the bypass and it would not be as congested but still busy but it would be faster for you.
