Asheville campgrounds

Mama Gerties is lovely and affordable. Almost nothing to do for kids though. They have private stream side sites. We also loved Asheville East KOA and they have nice sites on the Swannanoa River--narrow sites but very long. Close to the highway and sporadic train noise--but that didn't bother us. Very nice owner there and good staff. Both of these campgrounds are fairly convenient to Asheville (15 minutes?) but they are also nice because they are close to Black Mountain--which is almost like a mini-Asheville.

My in-laws live there so we have been to Asheville almost twenty times. IF you want recommendations for food or sites to see let me know.

We've been to Campfire, but didn't stay there. The access road in was fairly tight, though I guess since there are trailers and MHs there, it's accessible:)
Great views from some of the sites, not so good from others. Not really close to Biltmore....but not to far either.
Friends of ours stayed at Bear Creek, though they were there after the season, but like it. The were in a Class B.

We stayed at Bear Creek RV several years ago. Right off I-40 and close to a great farmers market (we stocked up on a lot of great stuff). WARNING---if you decide to go downtown Asheville shopping, the city has a contract with a towing company. I parked in half empty parking lot & had my truck towed, along with other out-of-state vehicles. Had to get a taxi, withdraw cash from bank, and pay $l40+ to get my truck back. ABC just did a documentary this week about this "towing practice" by many municipalities/contractors. All the vehicles I saw when I picked up my truck were Ga,Fl,Al,Tn etc. Because the city of Asheville treats tourists like that, I'll never give them my business again.

Davidson River CG in Pisgah Forest. Your kids will be in the river all day either swimming, tubing, or fishing. According to google maps, 46 minutes from Biltmore.

If you're looking for someplace with stuff for kids, KOA East would be my suggestion. There are other nicer ones, some closer to Biltmore, but lacking much for kids.

Parking: Just read the lot signage before you leave your vehicle. City surface lots usually have an unmanned kiosk where you pay for the space. Private lots are required to be very visibly signed. Most private lot owners have contracts with towing companies to keep their lots open for their customers, and yes, they will tow. The city doesn't tow except in rare cases of public safety; they just ticket repeatedly.

If your stay is primarily Biltmore-driven, Wilsons Waterfront RV park fits the bill, but there are no real amenities.

It is like an 8 minute ride to the Biltmore.

The park is clean, and level. There is a public trail that goes through the park that connects to a public park at one end, and another park along the French Broad river with playgrounds. Plenty of room to walk and bike. The waterfront sites are peaceful. Wilsons allows the use of Passport America quite liberally.

The only caveat is that it is right next to/under the interstate. If you can deal with the noise...you'll be fine.

Asheville East is without a doubt a great choice. We have stayed there many times and always enjoy our stays. There is a pool, a river running through the campground which is usually docile, and several large lakes for fishing. They offer cabins, a few lodges, a few pull thrus, and sites along the river. Don't let some of the grumpy old coots who take you to your site ruin your stay --- ignore them, move on, and have a great time.

By the way---AWESOME coffee shop for coffee snobs right down the road from Asheville East. It was a real treat for me and I went there every morning. Turn left out of the campground and Dynamite Roasters is about three miles down the road on the left.
