I'm going to rent an TT from Fort Bragg and head for the mountains in October to see the leaves. Can anyone recommend a park to try? Or perhaps one to avoid? Thanks!
We loved Mama Gertie's. When we could not get a spot at Mama's, we stayed at KOA east. They were friendly and helpful, but we did like Mam's better. Lake Powhatan gets great reviews, but was fully booked for our dates. Might be full for October, too, but worth checking.
Black Forest CG near Brevard is a good place, seated in the waterfall region. Tons of scenic hikes lead to great waterfalls, if you are into that stuff. We were there last October and had a blast.
Mama Gertie's is a great place. We went through there in early June to check it out while in Asheville for a wedding. They told us then that they were booked for October. Unless you get lucky with a cancellation, they're probably a no go.
If you want to travel a little farther than Asheville you might try the Tuckaseegee RV Resort located not too far from the Cherokee entrance to the Smoky Mountain National Park entrance. Great camp hosts and a convenient location to the park and mountains of NC.
If you can get a site there, I suspect the Lake Powhatan Recreation Area campground would be a good base for leaf peeping. They have some full hookup sites and pretty reasonable rates. We'll be there in a few weeks to visit friends in Asheville.
