I-65 Louisville to Indianapolis In

Has anyone traveled I-65 between Louisville Ky to Indianapolis In lately. We have to travel it twice a year as a portion of our travel and the potholes were so bad they broke things in our motorhome. Last year we went a different route but it added over a hundred miles to our trip.

Define "responsibility", I find it very irresponsible to leave our state's highways in such horrible condition that travelers alter their route to avoid us altogether.

To the OP, if you are going north through Indy or west of Indy 65 is probably your best bet. It is still rough in spots and there is some construction. If you are going to Indy then head east on I70 I would recommend getting off 65 at Seymour and take 50 East to State Rd 3 and take it up to I70 at New Castle. When you get to the Cambridge City exit I70 is pretty rough clear to the Ohio border.
  • We used I-65 and I-69 on our return to the Detroit area from Nashville last May and they were both in such poor condition that I would be very hesitant to tow through there again if other options were available.

I thought it was gonna be a great alternative to the I-75 northern Ohio construction zone that runs from Toldeo to Findley with plenty of areas with no shoulders. I'll take my chances with the I-75 route this year to avoid Indiana.

  • We were not going that fast, we usually travel around 60-62. At the time we were pulling a tow dolly and it actually broke the bulbs in the tail lights. As far as the extra gas money for the 100 miles, it is the extra time travel. I guess we will stay off of I-65 for another year.
  • I just used I-65 Wed.(24th) from Columbus to Indy. There is still construction from Edenburg exit to Indy and a 55 mph speed limit. Trucks are advised to use the left lane as the right one is still rough. I have not been south of Seymour in a long time so not sure how it is now. A portion of US-31 from Seymour to US-46 at Columbus will be closed April 1 till late Nov. for a bridge replacement.

BTW how fast were you going to break things in the RV?

We effectively totaled a seven year old Nova hitting a bad one at 15 or less. We were slowing for a left-hand turn.
  • Google maps shows an alternate route starting in Seymour and ending up on I-74 which adds about 28 miles to the trip. No guarantee that I-74 is any better.

  • What costs more repairing "broken things" or the fuel for a extra 100 miles?
