I-70 in Colorado, going East

Has anyone experienced the "toll road" part of I-70? It appears that towing of any trailer would not be included in the toll road portion of I-70. Does that sound right? Hate to assume. Thanks

Thanks for all the answers. RedRocket, this is what I read also. I just wanted to make sure that it is an option whether one wants to use the toll part or not. I also believe from that the Colorado Highway Dept. said no trailers, so I would be inclined to believe that all trailers including RV's were included. Again Thanks to all.............

You are correct that trailers are not allowed on the I70 eastbound ExpressToll lane. I even read somewhere that vehicles longer than 25 feet were not allowed either, but not sure if that is true. That ExpressToll lane is generally pretty expensive too, so unless going through there during peak traffic time, you would't want to pay for it. I've never paid for it but also don't usually find myself on I70 during peak traffic times... it can be a nightmare. Do yourself a favor and avoid that I70 eastbound section of highway Sat/Sun from about 3p-6p winter and summer.

That lane has not even been open for 2 years yet and a lot of CO regulars commonly forget it even exists. Not surprising that it may have slipped Thom's mind that it existed.

Hey Rocket...of course, you are correct, that express lane is there, has been for a while, I've used it a few times going solo coming back from the mountains. Since OP mentioned tolls I presumed (wrong of me, I know...brain F**t) that he was referring to toll ROADS vs toll LANES. I have the ExpressToll sticker so I use those lanes when necessary to beat the traffic, mostly on I-25.

Sorry about that I should have made myself clear and said toll lane instead. Brain F@@ts are contagious.............

As noted above, there are no tolls on I-70 itself.

There are tolls on E-470, which is the toll beltway around the east side of the Denver Metro area. 47 miles long, there are 5 toll stations (license plate/ExpressToll readers). Charge is per axle. Standard charge for 2 axles, each additional axle incurs an additional charge. It can get very expensive going all the way around. The rate is $3.55 for 2 axle vehicles, and an additional $3.55 per axle.

Actually, there is the toll section on I70 eastbound near Idaho Springs but is only a single lane Express Toll option and you do not have to take it. There are two other lanes that run next to that section that are not toll.

But again, there are NO TOLLS on I-70.

ETA: There is a proposed ExpressToll lane as a part of the redevelopment construction of I-70 from I-25 to Chambers Road.
  • There are 2 relatively new toll lane stretches on I70, one coming down the mountain, and the other on the east side of downtown. Look up CO-DOT's express toll lane page. I've looked at it, but didn't pay attention to tolls for the number of axles or trailers.

You don't have to use either portion, and if you aren't setup ahead of time to pay, it would be simpler and cheaper to skip them.

Correction - the Mountain express lanes are open at peak times, but the eastern part is just planned.
