I 80 out of California through Nevada and Utah

I haven't posted since last year maybe but we're going out to California for a couple of weeks and I'm wondering if anyone can offer info on I80 through Nevada and Utah. We'll be heading back to Colorado.

I looked at the state map of both states and it looks barren out there. My husband refuses to go back down south and through Las Vegas like we usually do. But it looks like the return trip back on that interstate through Nevada is going to be boring. I haven't even begun looking for RV parks to try and stay at. We'll have the kids with us and it would be nice if we could find one with a pool or something in the area to do. Otherwise, I think this will end up being a grueling point A to B drive. And I don't like those.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!!

  • Thanks all! I did look at a couple of RV parks in Winnemucca. Didn't look at Elko but will. The only reason I like going through Vegas is there is a really nice RV resort, Oasis RV Resort. Probably the nicest pool set up I've seen for an RV Park. Plus it would be hot enough to spend time at the pool. It takes forever to get hot here in Colorado and it doesn't look like California is going to be hot, temps will be nice but ocean water is cold. So I wanted pool temps for the kids and that is a guarantee with Vegas. Some of the 80 route RV parks have pools but they aren't huge.
  • I-80 is a great route make sure you stop at Elko great museum. 80 go's down the middle of the great basin, beautiful mountains out there. Plenty of RV parks Gas Ect. It is much prettier than going through Vegas.
  • Around Salt Lake is Lagoon Amusement park. They have a campground and good rides with much shorter lines than Disneyland. They also have a water park included in admission price. You can take 84 back to 80 and it is a very pretty drive through there.
  • before you cross the great salt flats racing grounds area, get that film "The World's Fastest Indian"
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0412080/

a funny movie based on a true person with good actors.
  • There are RV parks in Reno, Winnemucca, Elko. You should have several to choose from. The scenery is desert and mountains.
    Have fun!
  • It is an interesting drive, reminding you how vast our country really is. It is either boring or fascinating for hours upon hours. For the children, take books, games or videos. But the roads are nice.
    Happy Trails.
  • There are some KOA's along the route. The SLC KOA is a really nice campground, easy access on and off of 80 as well.
