I70 from Denver to I15 in the winter

It's relatively an impulse trip to go see my parents for new years, but we want to take our TT out to Utah this weekend.
We have 2 options, the north route of I80 which isn't as scenic, doesn't have as nice campgrounds (unle# you know of any awesome ones) and the wind is atrocious in Wyoming. The other option is the southern route from Denver to I15. I haven't traveled this entire route and it's been quite a while, but how's hauling a TT through that in the winter? How are the passes and turns?
Any help or other recommendations would be extremely helpful!
  • We took 24 from Colorado Springs to 70 and it was great! Our first winter trip!

    Thanks again guys!
  • Thanks for all the tips guys! Might be leaning to I70. Just put new tires on today, weather is so-so but we'll be traveling during the day and off the road well before night.
By the way, on my searches I found the weather channel has a neat feature that let's you select a portion of a highway and it tells you the forecast for different cities on the route.

Any good full hookup CGs on this section of 70 anyone can recommend?
  • Keep an eye on the forecast. There's currently a 30% to 40% chance of snow on Saturday and Saturday night. We went to Denver and back on Christmas eve to pick up the FIL and ran into horrendous conditions. The forecast was similar as this coming weekend, and CDOT was caught unprepared. When we got through the tunnel, the road hadn't been plowed, no sand had been put down, and they hadn't even had time to put up any chain restrictions for trucks. We were behind a semi where the cab was going sideways down the road. On the other side, they had huge front end loaders pushing semis up to the tunnel. They closed the road westbound about the time we were going through to Denver to clear all the wrecks, hence the 2 1/2 hour trek mentioned above.

All I'm saying is, check out the forecast and radar on the morning you plan on leaving.

Also, you can check out the traffic cams on this page.
  • IMHO -- check the weather and GO -- we have never had an issue in our rig and have been through the tunnel in 5-8" of snow -- not that I'd advise it but it is possible. When the snow has been cleared it is an easy drive.

    BOL,
  • Check local weather before leaving. If roads are dry then it's no different than traveling the route in the summer time and local forecasts are the best way to find out. Fortunately the exact same advice covers either route and there is really no reason to make the decision ahead of departure time (what would you do differently?)
Good luck and have a great trip.
  • I live in Colorado's high country not far from I70. Getting ready to head out myself. We are currently experiencing a break in the snow and bitter cold. The weather looks stable into the first week of January. You shouldn't have any trouble. Highs in Vail are in the 40's. Just time your transit over the top on I70 to hit the warmest part of the day.

  • Personally, I think I70 would be the better route regardless of winter. I80 is closed much more often than I70. Once you get to Glenwood, it will be clear sailing.
  • It depends on the weather. The other day some friends of mine spent 2 1/2 hours to go a couple of miles on I70 approaching the Eisenhower Tunnel during a snowstorm. If the roads are clear no problems...
