I75 South to Orlando Fl

We are heading south right now and I heard that the construction around Atlanta is terrible. Does anyone have any ideas for avoiding the area and would I85 be a good alternative? We are in a 38' MH towing a car. Thanks ahead of time!!!

  • Right now the Atlanta traffic isn't the problem, it's that 10 to 20 mile back up southbound from just south of the confluence with I-675 to Stockbridge/McDonough. We drove northbound last Thursday & did ok but southbound was a parking lot (I posted about it here). We returned to Florida yesterday and it was not quite as bad, but very congested and slow. We had planned to exit at 19/41 to Griffin and use US 19, but GA 5ll reported it to be just as bad. I think we lost about an hour with the 15mph stop and go traffic. Depending on where you are going in Florda you can seek alternative routes but for most of us it is grin and bear it. lizzie
  • Well, it's too late for this trip but we will definitely try it another time. We (and what semis like 1000 semis) are coming up to Atlanta. Will probably take bypass. Husband's choice - not mine. Thanks for the great tip and we are sorry we missed it tonight
  • I am sure there will be opposition to this suggested route as the consensus seems to be that Atlanta is a piece of cake at certain times. Atlanta driving in an RV is tense and miserable regardless of time IMHO. I have heard all that before but here goes. We use this route every time for north south travel around Atlanta. 4 lane all the way. Virtually no traffic. Highway speed. Excellent road conditions. Few traffic lights. It really works. May be an hour longer to Orlando because its a more relaxing pace. You will not run into a traffic jam on this route. In fact there will be times you won't see a car for a bit of time.

Southbound out of of Chattanooga on I-75 exit 312 SW on to GA 53. Head to Rome and turn left onto GA 1 the Rome bypass. Go to US 411 and turn right and proceed to US 27. Take it south to LaGrange and turn left on to the Davis road bypass (this bypass new and it may not show on your GPS). Proceed to GA 109 (at the LaGrange mall) and turn left and proceed to I-85. Proceed north toward Atlanta about 1,000 feet on I-85 then exit immediately south on I-185 to Columbus. As you pass through Columbus you will approach the entrance to Ft Benning which you will recognize as a very ornate bridge. As you pass under that bridge exit right on to US 82/GA 520. Proceed to Tifton (using the Albany bypass) and return southbound to I-75.

Google maps says going straight through ATL from Cincinnati to Orlando is 13hrs 15 minutes 901 miles. (Assumes no traffic jams?)
This route we use is 951 miles and 14 hrs and 45 minutes- and you will not run into traffic in GA

We run this route consistently with our moho and toad. About 80% of it is 65 mph the remainder mostly 55 except in a few short urban areas. Its scenic, relaxing and an enjoyable ride compared to the Atlanta traffic, road surface and construction mess.

We are really about the destination. Most efficient way would be great. Thanks everyone for the feedback

Sorry, I can't help you. We are always about the journey. Hope you will one day.

  • If you're on the road now, you are more than likely going to hit some horrendous holiday traffic. If you don't dilly dally, and get through Atlanta mid-week, you're going to experience the best traffic for the next week or two. Kids are out of school this week, so, it seems everyone is heading for Disney World. There's really no good way to get around Atlanta, I-85 and I-75 both merge in Atlanta. The only route I can figure which will avoid Atlanta traffic would be to get off of I-75 at Calhoun Ga, onto Ga Hwy 53 to Rome Ga, where you could pick-up US 27 to Carollton Ga, and then catch Ga Hwy 16 to I-75. I really don't think that would be any faster than going through Atlanta, but it's all good road, much of it 4-lane. Wave as you go through the 4-way stop sign on Hwy 16 in Turin, I only live about a mile from there. Hwy 16 is two lane from Carollton to Griffin, but good road without a whole lot of traffic, usually.

If you're going to Disney World, get off of the Fla Turnpike on Fl 429 South and enter Disney from Hertzog Road. You avoid I-4 in Orlando that way, which usually is worse than Atlanta traffic.
  • There is construction in S bound lanes on I-75 north of Atlanta. Not in the actual lanes but they are building an overhead road on the right side. All this is about 3 or 4 miles and pretty much finished by the time you get to I-285. Worst times is early in the morning rush hour. Moves along pretty well after 9 AM or a little later. Not good on Fridays! Come thru on a Sunday is best, but if you cannot, try between 10 AM and 2 PM. Remember when you come all the way through there are people trying to get back South to go home also.
  • Time yourself to pass through between 10am and 2pm, stay in the second from the right lane and watch out for lanes becoming exit only, you will be fine. Ignore the race car driver wannabe types, stay at 55-60 and roll on through. Going around is not really a good alternative unless you were going to be changing to I20 east or west.
