Interesting Facts about Hyder

Here is an article I found today. My DW was rasied in Stewart when they build Granduc Mine from the early 60’s to late 70’s. She and her friends has great stories from Hyder / Stewart, like crashing through the boarder on the peddle bikes with a stash of contraband candy from Hyder.

Well..yes and no....The Candian Border people are anything but lax.

There are no US Border people. There is no US Border, period. And once you drive out of Hyder for the glacier, you are back on Canadian soil.

We should just annex it and stop all this messing around. Hyder folks also use the hospital facilities in Stewert. So many are on Medicaid that they have worked out an 'arrangement' with BC Medical Sercies.

And it's the only place where the telephones have a Canadian area code, and if you phone 911, the RCMP or Stewart Fire or Ambulance respond, there's no US emergency services in Hyder.

I have a friend who flies up that way regularly.

They are very lax about the border to say the least.
  • Can't get the link to work either. Hyder is one of those places I wonder why it even exists. Stewart is a nice town, well kept, paved streets, attractive homes and business and Hyder is a dump. (with bears)

Hyder is also the only town in Alaska that does not use the 907 area code, but uses the same one as does BC. Until a few years ago, Hyder kids went to school in Stewart as Hyder didn't have a school. So the Hyder kids grew up singing "God save the Queen" in school. BC paid to educate the US kids without a charge from what I heard. Finally the State of Alaska accepted their responsibility to educate the children of Hwyder and built a school there.

The fish and chips at the Bus in Hyder may be the only redeeming quality to Hyder IMHO. LOL

My most notable fact about that area, Stewart/Hyder is the Google streetview story. (can't say favourite, as what they did was really stupid)
They drove all the way from Highway 37 into Stewart, went down one residential street, turned around and left Stewart on a different residential street, without driving the ONE block to the little downtown area, and the extra three miles to Hyder Alaska!
