Interstate 5 road conditions

I would like to know if anyone has traveled Interstate 5 from Valencia Ca north to the Oregon border in the last month or so we are headed north next week. Last summer 5 had so many potholes it was terrible to travel on , so if you have any info feel free to share. Thanks Dan and Irene , Ventura Ca
  • I don't know if you've left yet or not, but we drove I-5 from L.A. to just south of Red Bluff and I was actually surprised by how good the road was in both directions.

The traffic was horrific for the three day weekend, but at least the road was OK.
  • I would agree with samson, even though 5 is so dull. On 99, there is a lot of local traffic merging onto the freeway, especially in the early mornings and late afternoons as folks go to work. None of that on the 5.
  • We travel from Sac to Az three times a yr and I much prefer I 5 over 99. In April we came back on 99 and there are too many small Towns and much more traffic
  • Well to answer my own question I traveled Interstate 5 today from Valencia Ca to Sacramento with my truck and 5th wheel and I must say 99.9% of the highway is in great shape . Don’t hesitate to travel I 5.
  • Compared to most interstates in the West, I5 is pretty great. It can have a lot of truck traffic in Oregon, it can be rainy any time and foggy in the winter. Only the Siskiyou Mtns are much of a topographical challenge and not that high. Compared to a state like CO it is a piece of cake.
  • Up around Redding and north.....when Caltrans resurfaces I-5....they re-route traffic around overpasses so they can pave under the overpasses.
  • Just took the 5 from LA to the Bay area -- most of it was not too bad. Pretty bad around Buttonwillow.

Often, when there is an overpass, the road gets worse -- apparently, when CalTrans repaves, they can't repave under the overpass because it raises the roadbed, impairing clearance. So slow down a little for the overpasses.
  • Take CA 14 to US 395. It’s in much better shape and beautiful.
