Las Vegas to Mission Bay RV Resort

Hi all, my husband and I are brand new to fulltime RVing in a 42' Itasca Ellipse and getting ready to start on our first trip. We will be staying at the Mission Bay RV Resort in San Diego.

Any suggestions on the best way to get there from Las Vegas in an RV would be most appreciated.

Thank you.
  • I-15. If it is a immediate trip watch the weather closely. Black ice, and wind.

    x2
I-15 is the route we used all the time to go from Vegas to Southern California
  • From Las Vegas, take I-15 over past Barstow and Victorville.

Continue on south past Victorville for about another 20 miles.

You will come to a long down hill grade. The Cajon Pass.

Near the bottom you want to stay on I-15 to the right. (Don't be tempted to take the 215 down through San Bernardino.)

Stay on 15 on south down through Temecula and Escondido.

When you get into the San Diego area take the 163 split on your right. This will be at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar - - just past Miramar Road.

After a mile or so take the 52 west. Stay on the 52 west for a little over 3 miles to I-5 south.

Two miles down I-5 south take the exit ramp (right lane) onto Mission Bay Drive.

Continue straight down Mission Bay Drive for 1 mile and make a right turn and then an immediate 90 degree double back into the campground area.

(If you don't make that right turn you will be forced back out onto I-5.)
  • Thanks, More to See, just what I wanted, step by step directions. Even though we've been down there tons of times, now that we have an RV we wanted to make sure we took the easiest route. Thanks again.
  • You've received excellent routing info. As a full timer who retired out of Temecula, I've got to remind you of commuter traffic once you get down Cajon Pass. There are a number of problem areas, but you definitely want to be in San Diego no later than 4pm. Where 52 merges with 5, I've seen it almost at a standstill during commuter times. Finding Mission Bay RV is tricky the first time. You definitely do not want to do it at night. Also, their sites are not angled, and I remember them all being back-ins. Little tricky in the dark. Were I doing it, I'd stay at Pechanga RV Resort in Temecula and make it a 2 day drive. Negotiating So Cal freeways is more about avoiding traffic congestion than routes and miles.
  • It worked perfectly. We made sure to leave early in the morning to beat the traffic and not arrive too late, so didn't have any problems. Thanks again.
  • Glad you made it with no problems. We are in Desert Willow RV just off the freeway in a Hesperia, keeping an eye on wind warnings in Cajon Pass before heading to Pechanga tomorrow and the grandkids for Christmas. January in San Diego. We stay at Bernardo Dunes in Imperial Beach. 55+. Easy access to Coronado Island. We stayed at the park you are in, with the grandkids, last summer. Absolute zoo. Never again! Totally different in the summer. Woodstock across the street is worse! Bernardo Dunes & Chula Vista, are worth a look for future reference.
  • Mission Bay is somewhat of a parking lot and can give you a bad taste of the San Diego area. I would recommend KOA in Chula Vista or Chula Vista RV much nicer campgrounds IMHO.

    Have fun!
