Leaving your rig in Mexico short term?

Hello Everyone,

As we plan our first Mexico trip we are coming up with more questions daily. I appreciate you All taking time to answer.

The latest: If we should need to make a quick trip home to address some family, health or business issue, what do we need to know regarding FMM, TIP and rig storage?

I am assuming that if this occurred, we would fly home and fly back prior to the expiration of our 6 month TIP on our tow vehicle.

Thanks
  • The only way to leave a vehicle that does not have a 10 year permit is to surrender the vehicle to Secretaria de Aduanas, they will store it at an impound lot, make shure that there is nothing of value left in the vehicle otherwise it will be emptyied for you.

Depending on the length of your absense, rent an appartment and leave you posesion there and surrender the vehicle, when you return claim the vehicle and collect the posessions.

If you are pulling a trailer the trailer will have a ten year permit, the tow vehicle will not, trailer can stay the other one needs to be surrendered.

If you have an RV that is pulling a toad the RV can stay the toad needs to be surrendered.

  • I hate to break it to you. It is not legal to leave a vehicle in Mexico with a 180 day permit on it. It is only legal if it has a 10 year RV permit. Now you may get away with it, but in Puerto Vallarta, at least they are sticky. I know somebody who was not allowed on the plane. A sharp official will notice your visa showing you as entering with a vehicle and want to see the paperwork. The caravan company I am working with (Mexican registered tour company) has confirmed this is the case with Banjercito.

    That happens fairly often.
Leaving the Vehicle is not a problem and most RV Parks will allow You to use their Storage Area at a modest charge.

Where You can run into problems, is when You surrender the FMM to board the Plane. Just go with the flow and explain Your situation.

When You return to Mexico explain ,again and ask for the New FMM to be for 180 Days or until XXXX Date!

It's not as big a deal as it used to be!

Thank you. That is good news.

I was concerned that there may be FMM issues.
