Chippewa National Forest straddles Hwy 2, in MN. There are a couple campgrounds open until late Oct or mid-Nov. They are all right around Deer Lake, MN, which is in between Bemidji, MN and Grand Rapids, MN.

There are many MN State Parks close to Hwy 2, that are beautiful and pretty much empty this time of year, most if not all have electric.

    Lake Bemidji State Park

    Itasca (headwaters of the Mississippi)

    Schoolcraft State Park

    Enjoy! :)
  • Redwingfan,
Williston, ND is in the center of the oil boom, which continues. Oil field workers are everywhere in that area. People are renting RV space in their front yards for the workers. Lots of tanker trucks on the highways.
Here's an article about current conditions.

Double ditto on that. Even Minot area full.

Turtle River state park is right on US 2 about 18-20 some odd miles west of Grand Forks ND. Lots of trees. It has been quite a few years since I've stayed there but it was very nice.
  • Thnk you so much for your responses, fell free to provide more. The more stops the longer it will take to get home. LOL
  • The MN State park campgrounds are all pretty nice with decent facilities (and you can make reservations online, which I like), personally I have stayed at Father Hennepin, and Split Rock Creek parks, plan to see more next season. All of them are likely going to be pretty darn quiet and deserted at this time of year since school is back in session around here (we stayed at Split Rock Creek 2 weeks ago and were only 1 of 2 campers in the whole park!).

We have found that we much prefer state parks over private parks every time, even though the private ones have more features like TV, WIFI, and Water/Sewer, they are usually packed in like sardeens, where the state parks have nice large sites, and most are more private with wooded areas between sites.
  • Snork, Forests in North Dakota? The NF Service does run some "National Prairie" land there though. There are a couple State Parks in eastern ND on US2

BTW, do NOT plan to spend the night anywhere near (100 miles plus) Williston, there aren't any available.
  • Amnicon Falls State Park in WI. It's right off US 2. It's one of the few places in WI that I have not been to, but from what people tell me its a great place. WI state parks are generally pretty rustic with the advantage of having electric sites.
