Louisville - Bridge detour?

We are heading down I65 next week pulling our 5th wheel. I understand that there is bridge construction. Is there a detour? Is it clearly marked? Don't want any surprises.
  • If you are heading south, why don't you take I-265 around Louisville to Bowling Green. This is what we do when heading to Florida or Texas. I'm not sure if this avoids the bridge you are talking about as I can't remember a bridge along this route being under construction.
  • The bridge is over the Ohio at the KY/IN border. I haven't been over it since they shifted some traffic to the new bridge. There isn't a real convenient bypass.

I towed through the area twice at the height of construction while it wasn't the most pleasant thing ever, it is very doable and traffic speed is greatly reduced. With the additional lanes open, I wouldn't sweat it.
  • We pulled our 5th wheel over the new bridge on December 27th. It was a Sunday and the traffic wasn't too bad. We stayed on I-65 all the way through Louisville and really didn't have any problems at all.
  • Unless it changes before you go, which it could. The new bridge is open and if you are staying on 65, you take it. If you are going to 71 or 64 you take the old bridge. I believe it is getting better all the time, sure glad when it is over.
  • We towed our 5th wheel several times through Louisvillelast year during construction. Just pick a lane and take your time. The last time (before the bridge opened) there was some stop and go traffic but we were not delayed long. How far south are you going on I-65? If continuing on through Nashville, I would take the Briley Parkway exit and continue on that until you reach I-24 and once on I-24, I-65 is just a mile or so down the road. To me the Nashville construction is many times worse than the Louisville construction. Briley Parkway will allow you to miss all that. Just a little more info if you are continuing south.
  • Thanks for the info. Yes from other posts we had decided to take the Parkway. On the way home last year we went through Nashville - never again. While going through I was on the phone and hubby decided to take the Memphis exit!!! We had to go around and come back through again. When will he learn that I drive - he just holds the steering wheel!!!!

This forum is awesome. Makes our trips go so much smoother. Hopefully we will meet some of you great people in person on down the road.
  • Birmingham, AL also has loads of construction if you are going that far south.
