Luray Virginia to Myrtle Beach

Anyone have any experience with driving from the Shenendoah Valley to Myrtle Beach? What's the least hilly route? We have a Dodge Dakota Crew Cab pulling a 26ft travel trailer. We've driven to Myrtle Beach from CT many times, but we are detouring to Luray Caverns this time and spending a couple of night there before heading down to the beach.
  • Depending on when you get there and leave, I will be there this upcoming weekend as well.
  • Thank you for the input, very much appreciated! Roy, thanks for the tip about 501. SkipnPatty, we'll be at the KOA.
  • 211 East can be tough. It is steep up and very steep and very, very curvy down. I don't like it and my setup pulls and stops very easy. You want a nice drive and easy driving, take 211 west past Wal-mart. About 4 miles out, turn left on 340 and follow 340 all the way to 64. Take 64 east and then pick up 95 south. Are you at the Koa or Jellystone?
  • 64 is easy peasy. Ran it last fall from 81 to 95. No extreme grades.Only slightly hillier than 66. The hill going up to the cave is as steep as any on 64 just shorter. The caverns are very nice and worth seeing.
  • Take 211 east to US17 south. US17 has no hills but it does have a few stop lights. It might take a little longer but it will be a more pleasant ride.

I think the only way with no hills is to back track I81 North to I66 and go East to I95 then down to Myrtle Beach. Going SOUTH on I81 and pickup I64 to Richmond is another easy route but you will have to go DOWN the big long grade hill at AFTON MTN PASS. This is a very large Interstate with few curves but is a long grade going down hill.... Once you pass the Charlottesville Exit you are good to go East to I95 without too much worries.

On I95 SOUTH we always go two exits or so past South of The Border in SC on I95 and pick up US501 that takes you into the south part of Myrtle Beach. Great route for RV's... We usually stay at LAKEWOOD RESORT on Ocean BLVD with Family there so be sure to follow the hugh BILLBOARD SIGNS for LAKEWOOD off of US501 to bypass most of the the town before getting US17 Bypass...
