Memphis TN to Clarksville TN

Heading from Memphis TN to Clarksville TN. GoogleMaps shows I40 and then north on HY13 (through Hurricane Mills / Cumberland City) or HY 48 (through Dickson / Cumberland Furnace). Motor Carrier Atlas shows both to be truck routes but I don't know either of these routes. I guess taking I40 all the way to Nashville and north on I24 is also an option if the time difference is reasonable.

Fifth wheel is 13'6" tall and 40' long. Any help appreciated.

  • What Johno02 said. Hwy 79 through Paris and Dover is much improved, and 65 mph in some sections. Good views as well with nothing limiting your 5th wheel.
  • I40 is in good comedition all across Tennessee (mostly), but in one of the most heavily travelled interstates, and carries a majority of the east-west truck traffic. I 24 is not as bad, and the is now a bypass around downtown from I40 up to I24. And it would be a lot out of the way. We are just 30' with a toad, but avoid that route whenever possible. Having lived in Middle and West Tennessee for over 2/3 of our life, I would go some other route.
  • Just give yourself plenty of time, and don't get in too big of a hurry. Watch the speed limits Carefully!
  • I40 out of Memphis, to about Brownsville,(west of Jackson. US 79 to Clarksville. Good road, will be mostly two lane, but a lot less traffic, and the shortest route. Mostly flat land. Over toward Dickson and US13, you will be in the hills, lot of up and down and twisty two lane. We are in Lexington, and run 79 from McKinzie east a lot. Quite a bit of new four lane that way also. Get a NEW Tennessee map, Google, Garmin, and all the rest are way behind actual roads and bypasses in that area. Been several years since we went to Clarksville, but I don't remember any problems.
  • I don't know the two cities you first mention, but I do know if you go all the way to Nashville you will be going farther east than expected. You would then have to back track about 6o miles or so.
