Need advice re: traveling across Hopi Reservation in AZ

We are in the early stages of planning a 4-6 wk. trip to the Southwest in Oct. We hope to head from Kansas City area to Santa Fe, Canyon deChelly, on across to Grand Canyon and then to Death Valley, before returning via southern AZ, NM and Texas, including Big Bend NP and San Antonio.

Questions---Is the drive via route 264 from Ganada to Tuba City, AZ worthwhile? What can we expect to see and do on this stretch of road across the Hopi Reservation during early Oct.?

Questions--What temperatures should we expect in White Sands, Carlsbad and Big Bend areas during the second half of Oct.?

Question--What RV parks with hook-ups are available on each side of Death Valley after Oct. 15? Recommendations?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

  • I've seen some post about 264. The thing that I remember is that people warn about LOTS of Goats & Sheep in the roadway & the locals REALLY don't like it if you run over one.
  • Technically most of 264 cross the Navajo Reservation. The Hopi reservation is in the middle, roughly around the junction with 87 (from the south). The historic Hopi communities are on mesas near this junction. Access to the mesas is steep, narrow and restricted. But there is a Hopi Cultural center and restaurant.

Window Rock at the east end of 264 is the Navajo tribal headquarters.

It would be a good idea to check the tribal websites for sightseeing ideas and guidelines.
  • . . .Good Morning. . .To answer some of your questions: Canyon de Chelly is AWESOME to say the least; we were blown away by the beauty! ( we plan on going back again for a longer visit - was there in October & got RAIN! ) Chile is a small unkempt town with just the basics tho. . . Panamint Springs Resort is in DV on the Western end of the park; has all the amenities plus bar, restaurant, lodging & fuel across the street; suggest a hike to Darwin Falls if you go there - Google it )( Was there in February & got rain & snow ). . .Just South East of DV is the town of Shoshone, CA They have a warm volcanic water fed swimming pool that is WONDERFUL at their RV Park. . .It is basic but with all the amenities. . .Fuel is EXTREMELY costly in Shoshone, CA but cost effective in Pahrump, NV. . .You might also catch of the desert tortoise while in Shoshone!! ( They have some in a fenced in area behind the motel where you can even feed them. . . If there make sure to visit China Ranch also; maybe 15 miles away from Shoshone - again Google them. . .

First the month of October is a GREAT time to travel the Southwest.

You will see a lot of just open Brown Desert - Dry Arid plains - when driving across the two Mesas. Should be easy drive, just not a lot that sticks in my head.

IMHO the route you have should be great, and most everything will still be open so that should not be a problem.

    BOL,
