- BmachExplorer IIThanks everyone. I made the trip today and it worked out fine. One thing it confirmed for me was at that time of the morning I would rather stay with 91 to 95 than deal with 84.
- CroweExplorerTRUST ME....I set my cruise at 70mph (even in 75mph states--yes my truck will do it) or at the speed limit. I will PASS 9 trucks before ONE passes me.
TRUST ME. I have driven that road many times and I stand by my comments. - LynnmorExplorer

I prefer that route as well. Yes you drive slower, but use less fuel and get there in the same amount of time. - cbshoestringExplorer II

Just be aware that 78 is full of semis who cruise at a fairly high rate of speed.
Comments like this one, crack me up.
YES...all those 65mph trucks can SPEED thru the 55mph zones on I-78.
Are there some owner operators with UN-governed trucks doing high speeds----YES. HOWEVER, O/O are a small percentage of trucks on the road. If you consider many of them are leased to larger fleets---the numbers of independents at a "high rate of speed" is very small.
Due to insurance regulations and fuel economy, most fleets have governed there trucks in the 65-68 range. Which means the driver can NOT do the speed limit on most highways.

Before careful what you moan about. There is current legislation calling for all trucks to be governed (60,65,68) at the same speed.
Predictions are that accident rates will increase because of the speed differential (split speed limits are dangerous---lot of small vehicles rear-ending larger vehicles).
The "numbers" also estimate more delays and decreased traffic flow. I CAN step on the right pedal when my truck is taking to long to "get around" a truck I am passing. A lighter trucking doing 64, takes a LONG LONG time to pass a truck doing 63. AGAIN-TRUST ME. Those of us capable of the speed limit get held up by 64 passing 63...very aggravating.
Enough ranting
OP---at 0100 your proposed route should be fine.
Accident on I-84 this past Thursday made a trip from Newtown, CT to Middletown, NY a rather long journey down 684 across 287 and back up I-87. I-684 is a bit bumpy. I-78 has ALWAYS been BUMPY.
After daybreak, avoid the city and radius at all cost. I-84 to I-81, then down I-476 would be my preferred route (209 an option).
I recently made a trip from Boston to Baltimore. 90,84,81 83 is only about 30 miles longer than a straight shot down 95....I bet it saved me about 3 hours. jplante4 wrote:

Wind Gap on Rt33 not as scary as it looks on google maps?
RT 33 is a 4 lane highway that is not scary at all... With that said, I would NOT take 209-33-22. ..
I would stay with your route of 91-84-684-287-78..- jplante4Explorer II

Wind Gap on Rt33 not as scary as it looks on google maps? - CroweExplorerSometimes it will skip a Road if the traffic is slow at the time you select your route.
Absolutely-Waze and GPS systems do the same. - BmachExplorer IIFarmboy that I did not know.
- Farmboy666ExplorerI just google mapped it and it included 684. Sometimes it will skip a Road if the traffic is slow at the time you select your route. 209 and 22 are a mess if your trying to make time. Your route looks good to me.
- dieselbobcatExplorerI went to college in Springfield and made the trip you are looking to complete more times than I care to mention.
Your assumptions are correct... the question is if you are towing or not...oops... posted way after others had already replied...
At that hour you are going to be fine... during rush hour or when there is excessive traffic, there are a few alternatives that will save some time... but none are worth the detour if driving late...
