My wife grew up in a house on US31 just south of South Bend. 5 decades ago the state took the front yard to make the highway 4 lanes. Then they put in the bypass around the SW side of town, and finally extended it north to Michigan, and east past Elkhart. About 3 years ago they bought the house to make way for the freeway version of US31. Now Google Maps is showing lots of empty lots in that neighborhood.
