Newfoundland

Hello Everyone

We are making a trip this summer from Windsor Ontario to Newfoundland. Just looking for some ideas on places to stay for the trip. This will be the first trip out east with the big rig.

Looking or any ideas anyone has.
Thanks
Dave
  • We we went in early June. During that time we saw plenty of icebergs but no whales. We wanted to see both but the rest of the trip made up for that. If you are military or retired military there are discounts for you and a number of passengers on the ferry (passengers only - not the RV)
  • Thanks for all the replies.
We are looking forward to this trip and trying to set it up so we are not just driving all the time.
I was doing some searching and found this site www.campscout.com
It looks like a lot of listings and information also.
    Thanks again

    Dave

We have been there twice, most recently in May 2014. The province has an excellent travel guide that you should order. We took the short ferry and when you arrive the Grand Codroy RV park is a great place to start (and finish) your vacation. There are many festivals in the summer and don't miss the boat ride in Gros Morne National Park. You have to walk about 3K to get to the boat but it is worth it. Newfoundland is very RV friendly and many towns have municipal campgrounds which are inexpensive and scenic.

I can't recommend the Grand Codroy campground highly enough. If it was in Nova Scotia we would be there every weekend.

  • The info is old because we took the trip in 2007, but you can see it at our webpage listed in my signature.

We are going again in 2015 but will be going via the Trans-Labrador Hwy.

Will be doing many of the same things over again. If you have the time we highly recommend the festival at Twillingate.
  • DW and I went there in 2013 and absolutely loved it. Would highly recommend the trip up to L'Anse aux Meadows. We stayed at Viking Village RV park because it was a Passport America park. Was nothing great, but would stay there again. We also wanted to go into Labrador so we stayed at the campground in St. Barbee. We were glad we took a day trip to Red Bay. We learned a lot about the Basque fishermen that came over for whaling. We stayed at Dildo Run P.P. while visiting Twillingate. The park was very nice and the people we met in Twillingate wonderful. We even had one lady bring us cod tongue to the campground and told us how to fix it. She was disappointed that she was not able to invite us over to fix it for us because we were leaving the next day. We stayed a few days at Terra Nova National Park and would recommend that as well. Went on several Ranger led events that were good. We stayed at Pippy Park Campground while visiting St. John's. I would stay somewhere else if I could find something better. The park is not in the best neighborhood. There were signs warning about recent thefts and to keep your valuables locked up. We still enjoyed Signal Hill and Cape Fear. We took the long ferry back, but we did debate about driving back to take the short ferry. It is just whatever you find best for you.

One thing in Nova Scotia that we HIGHLY recommend is the Fortress at Louisbourg. We spent two days visiting there. We love the actors in period costume.

    Have a great trip.
  • Go early to see the icebergs and return late to see the whales

Your largest expese will be fuel and ferry so make the most of your "once in a lifetime trip"
  • What kind of things do you like to do?

National Park campgrounds: Gros Morne, Terra Nova. Theatre in Cow Head with park cg there too.

World Heritage Site at L'Anse aux Meadows plan on day at Norsted Viking Village too.

Keep in mind that I lived in NL for 24.5 years.

Check at www.google.ca for Codroy Valley, Burgeo area, islands with canoeing and cg. Cape St. Mary's Bird Sanactuary, city of St. John's many interesting places; Trinity Pageant .....................

Of course, get your visitors guide Search term to use for each province you'll travel through = 'name of province + tourism'.

Take the short ferry drive both ways and see different things going each way.
