Newton KS to Albuqerque, NM via Hiway 54

Hey All, Trying to decide on a trip segment as we RV from Iowa to the Grand Canyon. We plan to stay first night in Newton KS and then trying to decide if we drive 600miles to Albuqerque in one day (mid-trip destination), or make two short days and stop somewhere along Hiway 54 in SW Kansas. I know Dodge City is near that area, is this worth the stop, are there any CGs near there that would have a one night spot on Memorial Day weekend? We can't Wally World it, as we are caravaning with in-laws and their small trailer, and they need A/C. Looking for any suggestions. Thanks!

A couple of other potential quick stops along the way if you choose to go Dodge City would be the Fort Larned National Historic Site, and the Carnival Heritage Museum and the Edwards County Mid America Museum both located in Kinsley.

Also wanted to add that Seven Winds in Liberal is a Passport America Park. It sounds like they have added Wifi and cable since we stayed there in 2010. Still gets mixed reviews.

Seven Winds used to be B&B. The guy that owns/owned it was a grouchy SOS he didn't get along with anyone. He had a stroke and I don't know if he is still alive. A couple of his kids came from AR to run the place and were going to try to make some improvements. They changed the name because it had such a bad reputation because of the ol man. The granddaughter is running the place. They did make the cable TV work and installed a working Wi-Fi. I will find out in late June if anything is new
  • Hard to say what will be available on a Holiday weekend. There are several potential stops along US-54 on the way to Albuquerque. Dodge City is worth a visit if you have never been there. I only know of two RV Parks there. In addition to Dorothy's House in Liberal there is also the Mid America Aviation Museum. There are also RV Parks in Mead, Guymon and Dalhart along US-54 that are suitable for an overnight. There is Ute Lake State Park East of Tucumcari not too far from US-54 and several decent RV parks in Tucumcari. There are several interesting things to see in Tucumcari.
  • Darn, hate to see all the mom and pop truck stops die out. One of the reasons I got off the road. Can only eat McDonald's and Subway so many days in row and all the TA's, Pilots and Flying J's are basically cookie cutters of each other.

Enjoy your trip and best of luck to you. The US roads are more fun than the "I roads". Actually get to see the towns instead of driving by them.

Ran US-54 in a big truck, always liked to get off the "I roads" when I could. Liberal KS was always a nice stop. There is the Seven Winds RV Park there. Never stopped but it's part of Good Sam.

Stop by "Dorothy's House" while your in town.

The truck stop on the west side of town use to have a nice thick cut pork chop that was worth the stop.

That truck stop is no longer there. 7 Winds is an older park been there for years. It has some shade and will be the cheapest. The Wi-Fi and cable TV work great. There is usally some work campers there. A newer park East of town with absolatly no shade and never will be. Every thing is crushed rock (gravel) . There are some spots at the fair grounds off Western Ave, no shade there either. Just after you cross the Cimarron River headed West about a mile is a RV park down along the river. There will be deer and other wild life running through the park. There are trucks on US 54 but its never been a problem for me. They most likely will be driver faster than you. Dorothy's house was an old farm house built in the late 1800's and moved to town a bunch of years ago to become Dorothy's house
