- ken56ExplorerJust did US 441 from Waynesville NC. to Inverness FL. Good road all the way, some 2 lane some divided 4 lane. Nice towns to stop in too. No issues pulling my 30 footer. It will be the way I go from now on. No interstate BS to put up with so its a lot less hectic. Not sure if you are intending on pulling anything but be ready for a workout if you go through New Found Gap in the SMNP to Gatlinburg if you do. Its steep. Lots of places to turn out if you need to. Be sure to stop at the top too. Big parking lot there but it could be crowded. Spend some time in the G'burg/ Pigeon Forge/ Sevierville area. Lots to see and do.
- Wrong_LaneExplorerRoute 1 does not stop in Calais Maine. It goes North for another 200 miles to Fort Kent Maine.
Route 1 all the way, in an RV would be a challenge. For instance in New York City Route 1 sort of skims along the north boundary of Harlem and cuts through the Bronx.
Could be a real adventure! - AtleeExplorer IICouldn't have been US11 in Durham. US 11, like you said paralles I-81 until it gets to Tennessee. Eventually, in TN, US 11 parallels I-59 all the way to NOLA.
You may have picked us US 501 which goes slightly northwest and eventually crosses US 11 in the Shenandoah Valley.pitch wrote:
I don't know that it is possible without touching some interstate.
We just got back in, picked up US 11 in I think Durham NC and took it and 15 to upstate NY. The only part that really sucked was from the VA/WVa line to Hagarstown MD the speed limit never breaks 45mph.
We found it a very pleasant drive for the most part. 11 parallels 81, often so close that both our GPS and S&T would jump the route onto 81.
We have a truck and 25Ft trailer and had no issues in towns we passed though. - pitchExplorer III don't know that it is possible without touching some interstate.

I still hate Interstates , but they are kinda nice when ya need em !
- 1ofmanyExplorerWe have been traveling from Tampa to Freeport Maine the past nine years and have followed the same path: Route 75 north to I-40 in Tn...then east on I-40 to I- 81 north to I-84 east in Penn through NY and Conn hitting the Mass turnpike to I-495 north around Boston. I-495 to I-95 into Maine. There are some steep climbs along this route, but this path avoids the major population centers that taking I95 all the way would include. Works for us.
- jplante4Explorer IIAt least in Boston, Rt 1 isn't usable by RVs. I'm sure there are many areas along that route that are problems.
US301 is how all the snowbirds went south before I-95. - 352Explorer

The mountain route would be my first choice. As far as I am willing to go. No time restraints. 2 weeks or 2 months. If you have that route through the smoky mountains I would love to have it. - pauljExplorer IIHow much urban stop/go traffic can you tolerate? - alfredmayExplorerPick up US 11 near Front Royal and take it all the way to the end in upsate NY near the Canadian Border. Then take US 2 East into Maine
