Ogden, UT to Woodland Park, CO (Pike's Peak)

Planning my Summer trip. On the portion of the route between Ogden and Woodland Park, Garmin Basecamp routes me through Denver and CO Springs (yuk). We like to avoid urban sprawl. We aren't in any big hurry and tow a 23' Koala ultralight with an F150 V8, so aren't too concerned with mountain grades. Any suggestions as to routes? I've driven US 24 between Hartsell and WP many times, but like 25 years ago. I recall it wasn't bad then, but not sure about now.

  • Sorry but the forum will not let me post more than a few words at a time - Hope this helps, I had written a little note on the stops but they would not print.

    BOL,
  • Thanks everyone for all the info. I'm going to fire up Basecamp again and see what I can come up with.

Busskipper, kind of weird you could only enter a line at a time.

  • Another option is south on US 6/US 191 to I-70, I-70 east to US 24 at Minturn, south on US 24 to Woodland Park.

This is the route I always take take to Woodland park from Ogden.
  • Thanks again for the suggestions. I've been poking around on Basecamp and see there is a route from I-80 near Fort Bridger, WY down to US191. It is 414 through Mountain View and Burnt Fork to Manila, then 44 through the Flaming Gorge NRA. Then 191 down to Vernal. Is this route suitable to tow a 26' trailer down? It looks like it could be quite scenic.

It is a nice route. But, it depends on how comfortable you are with mountain driving. Lots of switchbacks and steep grades, especially on 191 from Flaming Gorge dam down towards Vernal.

You can avoid all the major cities between Ogden And Woodland Park by taking this route:

I84 from Ogden to I 80 at Echo UT.
I80 to highway 40 near Park City.
Highway 40 to highway 64 in Dinosaur CO.
Stay on 64 to highway 13 just before Meeker.
Stay on 13 to I70 in Rifle Co.
Take I70 E to the highway 24 exit just past Eagle Co.
Highway 24 takes you into Woodland Park.

The highway 40 route is how I used to go to Woodland Park before I started using the highway 6 route. You can stop at Dinosaur National monument on highway 40, they have nice campgrounds if you want to make it a 2 day leg.

The highway 6 route is longer but faster. Either route is going to take you over Tennessee pass on highway 24, but Tennessee pass is an easy route.

Seems that on occasion they will just not take something I've typed in word and try to paste as an answer - it comes and goes so......

    Just read your basecamp route,

sounds interesting - couple of thoughts from when we have driven these areas. Need to understand that I will go out of my way to drive in the Mountains and I Love to drive them, so keep that in mind when reading my reply.
I love the drive from Ogden on Rt 39 into the Mountains - used to drive it in the winter to ski, and have always wanted to - but have not yet done it - drive it thru to Woodruff and Rt 16, so that might be an option, if you are up for the adventure.

Flaming Gorge - Green River and Rt 530 would be my choice pretty drive and more to see along the west side of FGNRA We enjoyed the Marina CG on the water and that might be an option.

Next is Dinosaur NM will always try to stop there as it brings back so many early memories, firs time I visited I was 8 and those Bones are just amazing, also the option to stay on the Green River CG would be special.

Then if you have been comfortable with the drive so far Rt 64 to Rt 13 would be fun.

Then the easy/straightest choice would be I-70 and Rt 24 to Woodland Park.

But there is one more adventure that you might enjoy after Rifle get off and head to Carbondale on Rt 82 (take the time to visit Maroon Bells) Taking Rt 133 to Redstone and Marble (4x4 to Crystal Mill) and on around to Black canyon of the Gunnison NP - to Gunnison (side trip to Crested Butte) - then to Salida - up to Buena Vista and then grab Rt 24 to Woodland.

Having done this trip a couple of times I would say that every mile is a Memory, just Beautiful. BUT I also love the Minturn - to Leadville route.

So many way to enjoy the drive,

Let us know what you decide and what you enjoyed.

  • Gary,

Thanks for the info. That's one of the routes I came up with after seeing all the other posts. It's probably the one we'll take as we probably will take in Dinosaur and may decide to stop at Rifle Falls SP. We stayed there a few years ago and it is now on our top 10 list of places to stay. We are torn between there and Timber Creek CG in RMNP, which would be a slightly different route. We probably won't decide for sure until were on the way back from AK. Heck, if we're not homesick yet, we'll probably do both.

Thanks again, everyone, for the great tips.
