Just tried to put plates on our 3500 truck and DH was told he needed a CVOR. I called the office in our little town - because they would answer the phone and gave details about the exemption. Told DH had to come in and they would call the hotline. Guess we will see what happens. I tried other Service Ontario places in larger communities but couldn't get to talk to a person. She put me through to the next level as I wanted a detailed answer, I waited on the line for 1/2 hr. then used the message facility where they were supposed to call me back (that was 2 weeks ago, I'm not holding my breath for an answer!).There is a PDF file available to fill out (most of it is "not applicable" for us personal use folks), the form plus $250 plus maybe a test at Service Ontario will allow you to get a plate renewal. The practice test on-line is relatively easy, I got 85% without knowing anything!It's a stupid cash grab!link

Well we did get the license renewed after the Service Ontario office in our little town called the HOTLINE to confirm the information that I had given her. Our truck is under 6000 kg so that was the exemption we used. Now I need further information regarding the CGVWR so we can adjust our RWR that appears on the ownership. I understood that the limit was 24000 lbs. My DH was told 10000kg that means 22000lbs. That has to put most rigs and drivers over the limit. Anyone know where I can find info on this?

I think you're confusing weight RATING with the actual weight. Your truck needs to be registered for at least what the truck and trailer together weigh as it goes down the road (I.e. loaded).For example, if your truck is rated for 6,000 KG (13,200 pounds) and your trailer is rated for 4,700kg (10,500 pounds) you have a combined weight rating of 10,700 KG (23,700 pounds). However if your truck only has a curb (actual) weight of 3,600 KG (8,000 pounds) and the trailer only has a curb (actual) weight of 3,000 KG (6,600 pounds) then your combined ACTUAL weight is 6,600 KG (14,600 pounds), so your truck would need to have a RGW of more than that 6,600 KG enough to cover any extra stuff you may pack along.

The other thing that you may be confusing is the driver's license requirement vs. the registered gross weight that you need to declare for the truck (answered by JaxDad).The attached link outlines the fact that your "G" license covers you if the 5th wheel RV and truck combo weighs less than 11,000 kg. Above that you need a restricted "A" license.Link

Thanks Yes I needed to know the 11000kg limit for the "G" license. I sometimes drive and I didn't want to have to get a restricted "A" license. We do need to upgrade our RGW. More money for the MTO I guess.

Good - remind them how many trailers are over the limit and ask them if they tell a potential customer"you need a A-R to pull this"

Had a long conversation today with 2 different MTO staff (I called twice) first time "you need a CVOR and a A-R.
A restricted A is 90% of a commercial licence -medical ,eye test, on and on The only thing you can't do is pull a air brake trailer. I don't think RV's are meant to be subjected to this.
So I called again "motorhome exempt"
sigh
Like jaxdad stated they are after the hotshotters using F550's and running commercial but under the radar ,but for the sake of a few hundred lawbreakers a 100,000 rv's get abushed,I doubt they could accommodate all of us if we suddenly showed up for our AR.

It will be interesting to see what they can do. I believe that they got the exemption on weights for larger 5ers in the past.

Thanks pipe ,I will pursue it but in a very 'light' way,I will make one inquiry in person and go from there ,if it seems like a simple process I will give it a try .......once, after that Iam done if they think I will constantly pay up and retest because of nitpicky failures........well no..
the classes need updating and the difference between commercial and non should not be determined by weight .
In Alberta my truck is/was a private vehicle ,use not weight is the important value

Hone, the question is, how many RVers know about these licensing requirements. When I had to get the AR, a friend in Alberta had written to me and mentioned the change. Then a year later when I was 3 days away from the road test, because of my age and being lumped in with commercial drivers, he wrote me and informed me that the rules had changed again. That's when I cancelled the road test, dropped back down to a D and dropped the Z endorsement I had for many years. I guess one would have to go to the MOT web site every single day to see what idiotic rules they make and change for RVers, because I never saw word one in the papers here. I'll tell you one thing, when I wrote to the then Minister, I wasn't very kind in what I had written. I know she got my point because she wrote me back when I said that she would never see the emails. There, I was in a good mood and now I'm snarly again. :)

I wonder how many of the owners of 35'and over 5er's will bother?
Iam more then half way there with my B...........I estmate 2 weeks of study , testing ,doctor appointments etc etc .
For a job OK but just to go camping?I bet the number of big trailers sold never comes within a tiny amount of the A-R's issued.

Hone, if the trailer weighs more than 2,800 KG (6,173 lb.) the RGW should be the weight transmitted to the ground by BOTH the truck and trailer.

As for licensing, yes there is an AR, but what you're towing with means nothing as far as larger trailers go. If it's over 4,600 KG you need an A or AR class licence.
