- Russ: Not just any car can be imported. Until recently there was a moratorium on imports. If your car is Asian it may not be eligible. Age matters as well. Currently it is about 30% to import. There is also an annual tax. Something like a tenencia. I agree with you 100%. We must live by their rules.
Moisheh - mexicorussExplorer IIIf you are gona get a Perm Res status in Mexico, you have already made the decision to be here full time. In that case you by law and common wisdom import your car or buy one locally. That way you are in compliance with the country that you choose to reside in. If you do the temp visa so you can still have your foreign car and the benefits of a foreign residence at the same time getting the benefits of residing in Mexico for what it offers.....you are indeed playing both ends from the middle. It's really easy to do the right thing and avoid the headaches if you simply decide what you want to do. You are not smarter than the system as some of you may think. If you decide to play both ends from the middle and you get caught by either Mexico or the USA you have no one to blame but yourself.
- Dear Mr: moisheh, owning property by foreigners is not a problem at all, some people do not understand that an individual needs to have a Government stamp of approval for staying in Mexico, same thing goes for the US, Mexicans buy property in San Diego, in Coronado there is a condominium complex next to the Amphibious Base, we call them the Taco Towers or the Tortilla Flats, 86% owned by Mexicans, those that are there permanently have applied for resident visas, not green cards.
Then you have the ones that purchase or rent property in Mexico and believe that that gives them the right to stay in Mexico with out getting the correct documents to do so, all they are asking for is trouble.
navegator - Navegator> No problem with long term rental or owning a house as long as you turn in your FMM before 6 months and get a new one. It is legal to purchase a home with an FMM. There are real problems with upgrading from an FMM. After having a Residente Temporal you supposed to apply for a Residente permanente . With an RP you cannot drive a foreign plated car. One could get a new Residente Temporal but it is expensive and you have to apply outside the country. The Gov. goofed when they made those new rules. The idea was to make it easier for foreigners but the law of unintended consequences kicked in.
Moisheh - midnightsadieExplorer IIyou don,t obey thee rules? you pay.sounds right to me.
- Overstaying the FMM spells trouble, loose the RV and the toad, as in confiscated, there might even be some jail time and Mexican jails are no place for gringos, unless the families can purchase a jail cell with amenities and protection from the general ruffians.
With the advent of computers coming on line the fact that some get a new passport, will no longer be wise they may re-arrest those deported for trying to reenter.
If some of you purchased property or got into a long term rental and you think that you can stay with a 180 visa think again.
Mexico is no longer a third world country it happens to be one of the strongest commercial and industrial partner of the US.
navegator - 3oaksExplorerDon't know about all them, but the two in the referenced article deserved to be deported. They didn't obey the Mexican laws.
Foreigners overstaying their visas in the U.S. need not worry. The Feds have no idea where you are. :S
