Phoenix to Salt Lake City, early March

I am towing a 5th wheel and need to travel during the first week of March. Dates are flexible during the first week of March to avoid weather.

It looks like there are 2 reasonable route options for me from Phoenix to Salt Lake City during the first week of March.

1. Grand Staircase-Escalante Route:
  • I-17 to Flagstaff
  • US 89 through Grand Staircase Escalante
  • West on Route 20 to I-15
  • I-15 to Salt Lake City

2. Las Vegas Route:
  • US 93 to Las Vegas
  • I-15 to Salt Lake City

Is the Grand Staircase route a reasonable option if the weather forecast looks good?

Any thoughts or suggestions on these routes?
  • Vegas route is less elevation changes; easier on the vehicle.
Page route is more scenic; more climbs.
Either is very acceptable to take.

If taking the route through Page and weather turns bad, an alternate is to go south at Kanab to Fredonia, then head to Hurricane Ut. Then go north through Toquerville to get on the I-15. SR20 from Panguitch is a good climb, and could still easily get snow at that time of year.
  • Watch the weather. It is likely to improve in the next two weeks. Either route will be fine if it is not snowing.
  • We go Tucson to Phoenix to Flag then take the 89 to Lake Powell/Page, Kanab, then SLC.
  • Thank you all. This is exactly the information I was looking for. I will be watching the weather forecast closely to decide on my route.

  • The I-17 route is a prettier ride but if there is winter weather you will be far better off on I-15. As we speak I-17 and most of I-40 within 40 miles of Flagstaff is closed due to heavy snow. Leaving Phoenix and taking 93 from Wickenburg up to Kingman is a good, direct route as is the second half on I-15 north out of Vegas.

Be advised that folks tend to haul butt on I-15, the speed limit is 80 in most of Utah but the interstate is a great way to make miles... weather permitting.

One should always take every road on the map.
