To avoid this thread going poof, I'll avoid further opinion, but much of this also depends on the complicated 3-party contracts that the tour companies force on the passengers and providers along with certain clauses saying that you can't get your $$ back.

Can't avoid further opinion :(......I'm a pilot as well and I long ago decided that there wasn't any flight that I HAD to take (whether in the big silver bird, in a spam can, i.e. Cessna/DHC, or in a rag-wing piper). I hope those poor folks didn't fly in crappy weather because they felt trapped when facing the loss of their flight fees.

Being a pilot, I read everything I could find on the crash and it appears that weather was the major contributor to the accident. HAL is one of the few cruise lines that will not force you to take an excursion in such conditions and will refund your money if you elect not to. We cruise on HAL and are very familiar with their policies.

  • Every few years it seems some shore excursion in Alaska goes awry. So much there depends on the bush pilots, but given the terrain and weather, it's always a bit dicey. So terribly sad for those lost and especially for their loved ones.

    This is a tragedy.

Tragedy indeed. proof once again the clouds and rocks do mix. Weather, weather, weather,, I'm a pilot and weather is a biggie.
  • A tragedy indeed.

I'm sure further details will emerge as NTSB et.al. do their work, but there's no upside to this at all.
