Provo, Utah to Jackson Hole

Hello everyone,

Driving a class C Motorhome from Provo, Utah to Jackson Hole and the directions say to take the 189 to the 16 to the 89 through Coalville, Bear River and Cokeville. How are the roads? Where are good places to camp along the way. Thanks for your help?

Let me know if there is a better route.
  • Welcome. This is what I do to plan a trip, RV parky is a great app to have on your phone also free campsite app, I have been using them for years. Then if I am concerned about a certain route I will check google maps satellite terrain map. Hope that helps you out, have a good trip.

That's a good way to go.

If it were my trip, I'd detour a little to the east from Evanston and take 189 up to Kemmerer. It's not that far out of the way and it's supposed to be fascinating up there. Kemmerer has all sorts of places to look for gems and fossils.

Google Maps says it's only 23 miles out of the way.

The last time we visited the Tucson Gem, Mineral, and Fossil show, many of the interesting things we saw were from Kemmerer, WY.
  • I'm not sure if there's a "better" route but I've been going up to Jackson for the past 30 years from So. Ca., and have always gone up the 89 beginning in Brigham City, off the I-15, north of SLC. It winds through Logan Canyon following the Logan River and then down into Bear Lake just before you hit Idaho. There are campgrounds around the lake including a KOA in the town of Garden City but the one we stay at is the Rendezvous Beach state campground at the south end of the lake. After leaving the Bear Lake area it winds through farmlands and some small towns into Wyoming and then through the Star Valley. Beautiful drive with good roads and little traffic. It's about 3 hours from Bear Lake to Jackson. We do it in a 30' class A.
  • There's also an Idaho state park on the northeast end of Bear Lake, and some primitive forest service and dispersed camping options in the surrounding area that are nice if you don't need hookups.
